Position Summary In this newly-created position, you will lead software projects that support U.S. households as they transition to electric energy for their heating, cooling, cooking, cleaning, transportation and more. As an Engineering Manager, you will principally be responsible for managing 4-6 Software Engineers and working with the wider Product and Data Science teams to create and extend our websites and consumer-facing software tools. You'll play a pivotal role in defining and creating the products, tools, and processes that allow us to make electrification projects preferable, affordable, and accessible for households nationwide. This position reports to Rewiring America's VP of Engineering.

What You'll Do You'll create and maintain consumer-facing apps to reduce the friction involved in going electric. This could include educational materials, tools to connect with contractors or plan projects, personalized costs/savings for your home, help finding government incentives and utility rebates, or prequalification for financing. You'll prove out new ideas, build iteratively, and solve for common and one-off needs across the web services, APIs, and applications you build.
You'll also support the development of our main organizational website, including CMS and CRM integrations, development of our design system, and integration of localization and translation services. The Rewiring America website supports our work to build up the electrification movement, including enabling the growth of groups like Local Government Leaders for Electrification and our CEO Coalition.
Our Personal Electrification Planner is the foundation of our roadmap to serve households and homeowners with both self-serve and assisted experiences. You'll work to meet the needs of early adopters and electrification enthusiasts who may find us organically, as well as low income and disadvantaged communities who may find us as part of our Rewiring Communities program.
As part of a growing organization with ambitious goals, you may find yourself prioritizing hiring, writing or evaluating technical designs and documentation, rolling up your sleeves to build a demo, meeting with customers or partners, or scoping and kicking off new work. This is first and foremost a management role. While you should have sufficient and recent technical skills and knowledge to enable you to effectively support your team, it is not expected that you will be hands-on delivering code and directly running production systems in this role.

As a technical leader you can create and evaluate engineering designs, or facilitate discussions to resolve complex tradeoffs.

Compensation and Benefits The salary range for this position is $160,000 - $190,000 USD, commensurate with experience. Comprehensive benefits package that includes 100% employer-paid health, dental, and vision insurance for employees (and their families). Employees are able to enroll in 401k retirement plan and are eligible for a 3% automatic contribution and up to a 3% employer match on 401k contributions. Employees are also eligible for pre-tax transportation benefits. Employees will receive 160 hours of vacation time, 80 hours of health leave, up to 2 days of casual leave, and 20 hours of volunteer leave annually. Employees will also receive 13 paid holidays throughout the calendar year (15 days during Presidential and Congressional elections). We have an office closure between Christmas and New Year. Employees are eligible for 12 weeks of paid family and medical leave after 90 days of employment. Regular, full-time employees and part-time employees are eligible to take up to sixteen weeks of parental leave, in all cases related to birth, adoption, or foster care starting from the first day of employment. - Strong commitment to the mission, policies, and goals of Rewiring America.
- 5+ years experience as a hands-on software engineer, including technical leadership running projects, designing systems, mentoring or coordinating the work of multiple engineers.
- 2+ years experience as a manager accountable for the success of a software engineering team, including planning the roadmap and continuous delivery of high quality software.
- Experience successfully recruiting, managing, and retaining a fully remote team.
- Willingness to travel 2-3 times per year for team retreats.
- Collaborative and communicative work style.
- Demonstrated communication ability across multiple mediums, with skill in delivering information in a concise and compelling manner.
- Ability to scope work to meet high-level objectives and independently communicate status updates.
- You enjoy collaborative code and methodology reviews and can provide thoughtful, constructive feedback to peers.
- Demonstrated positive impact on the overall health and productivity of the groups you work with.
- Experience in - or at the intersection of - consumer-facing apps, climate, sustainability, renewable energy, building electrification, civic or government tech, nonprofits, political campaigns, or other relevant domains.
- Experience with some of our current stack (Google Cloud Run, Postgres, Node.js, Typescript, Vercel, React, Next.js, Terraform) is helpful but not required.
- Familiarity and interest in working with headless CMS systems (e.g. Contentful, Storyblok), design systems, and CRM integrations (e.g. Salesforce) is helpful but not required.
