Company Values

Who we are

GitBook started as a simple open-source tool designed to let developers quickly publish content from a git repo. We've changed a bunch since then, but fundamentally we've stayed true to the vision of empowering software teams to document and distribute their knowledge.

Where we started

The first iteration of GitBook was a bootstrapped, developer-focused product built by co-founders Samy and Aaron, allowing folks to publish documentation (or 'books'!) straight from their git repos.

Where we're at

Now, we are a fully distributed team building the future of knowledge management, starting with technical teams. Our product has become more accessible, our team has grown, and we're powering knowledge sharing at some pretty awesome places.

Our Values

Our values reflect us as a team and shape our culture. They are designed to guide us from where we are now, to where we want to be. Every single team member is a value addition to our culture, so it's important for us to state our values.
  • Ambition: Aim higher. We plan and build for the long term. While we iterate with small changes, strive for large, ambitious results. Avoid the comfort zone, where we stand is not the end, but only a step.
  • Ownership: Take control and Own it. Everyone can drive, everyone can take the reins. There is no such thing as “it’s not my job”. When you observe a problem, don’t wait for someone to fix it, take the responsibility of fixing it.
  • Accountability: Be accountable to results. We are driven by results and not by efforts. We hold each other accountable to facts, and not to our personal perceptions.
  • Train: Our impact as a team is the result of combining individual skills. Personal growth comes from practice, training, and learning. As you face a challenge that you don’t know how to solve, learn from it to create leverage for the team.
  • Care: Give a shit. Caring for the customers means caring about what the customer achieves. Caring should also proxy through the team, help them achieve and learn; to better serve our mission.
  • Genuine: Say it and accept it. Be upfront and candid. Hold yourself and others accountable. Feedback is always about your work and not your person. Be respectful, be transparent, and genuine in your communication.
  • Team player: Leverage the team. None can reach high ambition just by themself. Leverage the team and different skills to create an outcome that’s bigger than the sum of its parts.
  • Architect: Plan and build.  As an early-stage company, lots remain to be built and everyone should contribute to architecting and building long-term solutions beyond simple day-to-day execution.
