Position Summary
We are seeking a hands-on Director of Finance (serving as the organization's senior finance leader) to lead our accounting and finance functions while partnering closely with executive leadership to support continued growth and operational excellence. This senior leadership position offers the opportunity to partner directly with executive leadership while overseeing accounting operations, financial reporting, project financial management, contract administration, budgeting, forecasting, and business planning.This role is ideal for a hands-on finance leader who enjoys operating in a growing entrepreneurial environment and is comfortable balancing strategic leadership with day-to-day financial operations.
Our organization manages multiple client projects involving complex contracts, extensive billing structures, project-based accounting, and diverse revenue streams. The Director of Finance will play a critical role in ensuring financial accuracy, operational efficiency, strong internal controls, and long-term profitability.
The ideal candidate possesses extensive experience in project-based accounting environments, preferably within real estate, right-of-way, engineering, consulting, infrastructure, or professional services industries. This individual must be highly skilled in contract administration, client billing structures, project profitability analysis, financial forecasting, and managing financial operations across multiple projects, clients, and funding sources.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Financial Leadership & Strategy
- Partner with executive leadership to support company growth, profitability, and operational objectives.
- Lead annual budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes.
- Develop financial models and analyses to support strategic and operational decision-making.
- Prepare and present financial reports, key performance indicators, and business insights to executive leadership.
- Identify opportunities to improve financial performance, processes, and operational efficiency.
- Drive financial process improvements and scalable systems to support continued growth.
Accounting & Financial Management
- Direct all accounting operations including:
- General Ledger
- Accounts Payable
- Accounts Receivable
- Payroll
- Revenue Recognition
- Financial Reporting
- Ensure accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Oversee audit preparation and external auditor relationships.
- Maintain internal controls, accounting policies, and financial procedures.
- Review and improve accounting workflows and close processes.
- Lead or support ERP selection, implementation, and optimization initiatives.
Project Accounting & Contract Management
- Oversee financial management of multiple concurrent projects and contracts.
- Develop systems for tracking project budgets, labor utilization, expenses, and profitability.
- Ensure proper allocation of costs and revenue across projects and business units.
- Analyze project financial performance and provide recommendations to improve margins and efficiency.
- Collaborate with project managers to monitor budgets, contract compliance, change orders, and project outcomes.
- Establish and maintain project accounting procedures that support complex client requirements.
Client Billing & Revenue Management
- Oversee complex client billing processes including:
- Time and Materials Contracts
- Fixed-Fee Contracts
- Manage extensive billing code structures and project-specific cost tracking requirements.
- Ensure accurate invoicing and timely collections.
- Monitor work-in-progress (WIP), unbilled revenue, and accounts receivable aging.
- Resolve contract-related billing issues and collaborate with project managers and clients as needed.
- Implement best practices to improve billing efficiency and cash collection performance.
Contract Review & Risk Management
- Review and evaluate financial provisions within client contracts.
- Assess financial and operational risks associated with projects and contractual obligations.
- Ensure compliance with contract terms, billing requirements, and reporting obligations.
- Support contract negotiations and pricing strategies from a financial perspective.
- Provide guidance regarding contract profitability, risk exposure, and financial performance.
Cash Flow & Treasury
- Manage company cash flow and liquidity planning.
- Prepare cash flow forecasts and monitor working capital requirements.
- Maintain banking relationships and oversee treasury activities.
- Monitor collections and payment strategies to optimize cash flow.
- Support leadership with capital planning and financial resource allocation decisions.
Compliance & Governance
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local financial regulations, including Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR) and ASHTO Indirect Cost Rate management, as applicable.
- Oversee tax compliance and coordination with external tax advisors.
- Maintain financial policies and internal control frameworks.
- Ensure adherence to GAAP and applicable accounting standards.
- Support insurance renewals, risk management initiatives, and audit requirements.
Leadership
- Lead, mentor, and develop finance and accounting team members.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Build scalable financial processes and infrastructure to support organizational growth.
- Serve as a trusted business partner to department leaders and project managers throughout the organization.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field.
- 10+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience.
- 3+ years in a senior finance leadership role such as Finance Director, Controller, Assistant Controller, VP Finance, or equivalent.

- Advanced knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting.
- Experience with Deltek, Ajera, NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Oracle, or similar ERP/project accounting systems.
- Experience managing budgeting, forecasting, cash flow, and financial reporting processes.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and leadership abilities.
Preferred
- CPA designation strongly preferred.
- MBA preferred.
