The Commercial Transportation Underwriter is responsible for evaluating, selecting, and pricing insurance risks to ensure profitable growth within established authority limits. They must negotiate terms and conditions with brokers while maintaining compliance with regulatory and organizational standards.

• Analyze risk factors and determine appropriate pricing and coverage within delegated authority.
• Review applications, financial statements, inspection reports, and other relevant documents to assess exposure.
• Apply underwriting guidelines, line of business strategies, and risk appetite frameworks to support sound decision-making.
• Negotiate terms, conditions, and pricing with brokers or clients to secure profitable business.
• Collaborate with internal teams such as claims, actuarial, and finance to resolve coverage or policy issues.
• Maintain accurate documentation for all underwriting decisions and ensure compliance with company policies.
• Monitor portfolio performance and identify trends to recommend corrective action when necessary.
• Participate in training and development initiatives to maintain up-to-date knowledge of products, regulations, and market trends.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• Bachelor's degree in risk management, finance, business administration, or related field required.
• Minimum of 2+ years of underwriting or relevant insurance experience.
• Demonstrated applied knowledge of underwriting principles, guidelines, and practices.
• Experience in a collaborative, broker-focused service environment.
CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSES / REGISTRATIONS
• Progress toward professional designations such as CPCU or AU is preferred.
• Valid insurance license may be required in some jurisdictions.
FUNCTIONAL SKILLS
• Proficiency in risk analysis and exposure evaluation.
• Ability to interpret financial statements and industry-specific data.
• Strong negotiation and relationship-management skills.
• Effective oral and written communication skills.
• Proficiency with underwriting systems and Microsoft Office applications.
• Detail orientation with ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
• Sound judgment and decision-making within defined authority.
The annual base salary for this position is $75,000 - $100,000. Additional incentive pay is available for this position.
