POSITION SUMMARY Vero is seeking a detail-oriented and highly organized Accounting Specialist to serve as the primary Finance owner of payroll while supporting payroll-related compliance, accounting, reporting, and process governance across our growing organization. Payroll will remain the primary focus of this role.
This role will exercise discretion and independent judgment in directing Vero's multi-entity payroll processes, resolving significant payroll and compliance matters, establishing controls and procedures, and partnering with People Operations, Accounting, Operations, and business leaders to ensure payroll is accurate, timely, compliant, and scalable.
Vero operates across multiple legal entities and jurisdictions and continues to grow through both organic expansion and acquisitions. As a result, this position requires someone who can independently evaluate complex payroll and accounting issues, make sound decisions within established authority, strengthen governance and documentation, and adapt systems and processes as the organization evolves.
While payroll will be the primary responsibility of this position, the Accounting Specialist will also own and support payroll accounting, month-end close, reconciliations, audits, systems improvements, acquisition integrations, and other Finance initiatives. The ideal candidate enjoys taking ownership, exercising judgment, solving complex problems, improving processes, and working cross-functionally in a fast-paced and growing organization.
Direct and manage Vero's multi-entity bi-weekly payroll process, establishing processing standards, internal controls, governance workflows, and review procedures to ensure employees are paid accurately and on time.
Govern the review and validation of payroll inputs, including new hires, terminations, compensation changes, bonuses, commissions, deductions, benefits, timekeeping, reimbursements, and other payroll adjustments; determine appropriate treatment for exceptions and non-standard items.
Establish and enforce payroll validation standards for employee time and payroll data, independently assessing exceptions and determining required corrective action prior to payroll submission.
Partner with People Operations and business leaders to resolve significant payroll discrepancies, determine appropriate corrective actions, and establish approval requirements for non-standard matters.
Perform final analytical review of payroll registers and supporting reports and exercise judgment to authorize payroll readiness or require corrective action before submission.
Exercise independent judgment to resolve complex employee payroll questions and discrepancies, identify root causes, and implement corrective measures that reduce recurrence.
Evaluate and authorize off-cycle payrolls, corrections, and non-standard payroll adjustments in accordance with established controls and applicable requirements.
Establish documentation and record-retention standards for payroll records, controls, approvals, and supporting documentation.
Lead payroll workstreams for newly acquired businesses and employee transitions, determining integration requirements, control needs, timing, and alignment with Vero's payroll standards.
Establish, govern, and continuously improve standardized payroll procedures, controls, checklists, calendars, and documentation across Vero entities.
Payroll Compliance
Evaluate, interpret, and enforce payroll compliance strategies across federal, state, and local jurisdictions in which Vero operates.
Govern payroll tax registrations, filings, payments, and notice resolution in coordination with payroll providers and internal stakeholders, escalating only matters requiring executive, legal, or external specialist input.
Independently research and resolve payroll tax notices, discrepancies, and jurisdictional issues, determining corrective actions and process changes where appropriate.
Evaluate and apply wage and hour requirements, payroll deductions, garnishments, state-mandated leave programs, and other payroll-related regulations; establish procedures to maintain ongoing compliance.
Oversee quarterly and annual payroll reporting and reconciliations, including Forms 941, W-2s, and other required filings, and resolve material exceptions before filing.
Direct year-end payroll activities and employee tax reporting, establishing timelines, review standards, and issue-resolution procedures.
Establish and maintain payroll documentation and control evidence sufficient to support internal controls, external audits, and regulatory requirements.
Interpret payroll-related regulatory changes, assess business impact, and recommend or implement required policy, process, or system changes with Finance and People Operations.
Payroll Accounting & Month-End Close
Own payroll-related accounting entries and reconciliations, determining appropriate accounting treatment for routine and non-standard payroll matters.
Govern reconciliation of payroll registers to the general ledger, independently investigate differences, and determine corrective accounting or payroll actions.
Own payroll-related balance sheet reconciliations, including accrued payroll, payroll taxes, benefits, deductions, and other payroll liabilities, and resolve material or unusual reconciling items.
Determine and prepare payroll accruals and related month-end and quarter-end accounting, applying judgment to estimates, cut-off, and unusual items.
Establish and apply payroll accounting and allocation methodologies to ensure expenses are recorded accurately across departments, cost centers, markets, and legal entities.
Evaluate and govern payroll allocations and other accounting activities associated with Vero's multi-entity structure, recommending improvements to methodology and controls as needed.
Serve as the primary payroll accounting contact for external audit requests and payroll-related financial reporting, independently resolving questions and control matters within the role’s authority.
Systems & Process Improvement
Own the design and continuous improvement of Vero's payroll, timekeeping, and related Finance processes and control environment.
Architect and prioritize opportunities to automate payroll and accounting processes, strengthen controls, reduce manual risk, and improve efficiency.
Lead Finance requirements, testing, control design, and implementation decisions for payroll and timekeeping system integrations and enhancements.
Partner with People Operations, Finance Systems, Accounting, and Operations to establish scalable payroll data standards, system workflows, and ownership expectations.
Design and govern scalable payroll processes and controls that support Vero's continued organic growth and future acquisitions.
Formulate and lead the payroll integration strategy for newly acquired legal entities, establishing scalable systems, unified processes, control standards, and compliance alignment.
Establish process documentation standards and implement control improvements that reduce key-person dependency and strengthen business continuity.
Accounting & Finance Support
Own assigned month-end close activities and independently manage general accounting projects within the role’s scope.
Prepare, review, and approve assigned account reconciliations, journal entries, and reporting; independently resolve unusual or complex items within established authority.
Own employee-related expense and benefit reconciliations and determine corrective action for material discrepancies.
Lead or independently manage assigned Finance initiatives, system implementations, acquisition workstreams, and special projects related to payroll and accounting.
Act as a cross-functional subject-matter owner for payroll and related accounting matters as priorities evolve and Vero continues to grow.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Human Resources, or a related field; equivalent relevant experience may be considered.
Demonstrated ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment on significant payroll, compliance, accounting, or systems matters, including resolving exceptions and recommending or implementing process and control improvements.
2+ years of payroll, accounting, or related experience.
Experience owning payroll processes and exercising independent judgment over payroll exceptions, controls, compliance, or system workflows.
Understanding of payroll taxes, deductions, benefits, and payroll-related compliance requirements.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
Ability to independently govern recurring, deadline-driven processes, prioritize competing matters, and make sound decisions with limited supervision.
Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
Ability to independently research complex discrepancies, identify root causes, determine corrective action, and drive issues through resolution.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to handle confidential employee and compensation information with appropriate discretion.
Proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience owning and governing bi-weekly payroll, including review, exception resolution, controls, and final payroll readiness.
Experience supporting payroll across multiple states and legal entities.
Experience with Rippling or similar payroll and HRIS platforms.
Experience with timekeeping systems and payroll integrations.
NetSuite ERP experience.
Experience preparing payroll-related journal entries and account reconciliations.
Experience working in a growing, multi-entity organization.
Experience supporting mergers, acquisitions, or payroll integrations.
Telecommunications, broadband, infrastructure, construction, or similar industry experience.
Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) or Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC), or interest in obtaining a payroll certification.

COMPENSATION, BENEFITS AND ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The anticipated annual salary range for this position is $60,000 – $75,000. Final compensation will be determined based on factors such as the candidate's experience, skills, and internal equity. For Colorado-based applicants, the pay range and benefits listed apply in accordance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act.
This position may be eligible for an annual discretionary bonus, based on individual performance and company profitability.
