UW Medicine Patient Financial Access Services – Finance Access Clearance Team (FACT) has an outstanding opportunity for a Financial Access Specialist Lead.
Work Schedule
100% FTE (40 hours per week)
Day Shift
Monday - Friday, 8:30am - 4:30pm
Primarily 100% remote with occasional on-site assignments at UWM based on operational or training needs
Department Description
The FACT department coordinates the insurance clearance process for inpatient planned and unplanned admits, outpatient surgery, clinic procedures, high-dollar infusion, and/or radiology high-dollar procedures. This includes various functions associated with obtaining and verifying insurance coverage and benefits for facility and professional services.

Position Highlights
Under the general direction of the FAS Supervisor, leads and supports Financial Access staff while performing core specialist duties.
Responsibilities include assigning tasks, training new staff, monitoring performance, and resolving issues in coordination with the supervisor. Oversees insurance clearance for inpatient admissions, outpatient surgeries, clinic procedures, high-cost infusions, and radiology services.
Areas of coverage may include emergency services, inpatient hospitalization, transportation, rehab, therapies, nursing home placement, home health care/durable equipment, outpatient surgeries, clinical visits, and specialized procedures; also verifies L&I, Crime Victims and other coverages.
Primary Job Responsibilities
Train, orient, and support new Financial Access Specialists; assist in candidate interviews
Review and ensure accuracy of staff work while ensuring compliance with procedures and payer requirements
Coordinate and obtain insurance authorizations; verify eligibility and benefits in Epic
Document case progress and authorization status in Epic; provide updates to internal teams
Assist uninsured patients with Medicaid/Charity screenings and explain financial assistance options
Provide cost estimates and discuss payment options with patients
Collect and process patient payments using Epic’s cash drawer
Contact patients regarding benefits coverage and potential out-of-pocket costs
Complete and follow up on Notice of Non-Coverage forms and missing referrals/authorizations
Participate in special projects and recommend policy or workflow improvements
Stay up to date with hospital practices and payer guidelines through ongoing education
Requirements
High School diploma or GED certificate
Three years of experience in a medical office setting
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may substitute for stated requirements
