CopperPoint has an exciting opportunity for a Workers Compensation Production Underwriter. This individual contributor role is responsible for managing an assigned agency territory and underwriting book of business, with a focus on profitable growth, renewal retention, and strong customer service. The position leads new business development, risk selection, pricing, and agency relationship management within delegated authority, while partnering with underwriting leadership, internal teams, and agency partners to execute territory strategies and achieve short- and long-term business objectives.

 

Job responsibilities:

  • Owns an assigned agency territory and book of business, with accountability for profitable new business production, renewal retention, risk selection, pricing discipline, and agency engagement outcomes.
  • Evaluates workers compensation submissions by analyzing class codes, exposures, payroll, loss runs, experience modification factors, hazard controls, financial considerations, and overall risk characteristics.
  • Makes underwriting decisions within assigned authority and escalates risks that exceed authority levels or require leadership review.
  • Prices new and renewal business in accordance with company underwriting and pricing guidelines while balancing growth, profitability, retention, and producer relationships.
  • Develops and manages agency partnership plans, including production goals, pipeline management, target account strategies, agency performance, and profitability improvement opportunities.
  • Conducts regular agency visits and producer meetings to communicate appetite, underwriting strategy, service expectations, pipeline status, and mutual business commitments.
  • Identifies and pursues opportunities to expand profitable workers compensation production through assigned distribution channels.
  • Presents new and renewal proposals to agency personnel, clearly explaining underwriting decisions, pricing rationale, coverage terms, and account strategies.
  • Maintains current knowledge of the assigned territory, including production sources, competitor activity, economic trends, regulatory considerations, and geographic risk characteristics.
  • Partners with underwriting leadership, claims, loss control, audit, and operations to support account performance, service standards, and overall portfolio quality.
  • Provides a high level of service to internal and external stakeholders while maintaining accurate documentation and adherence to company policies, procedures, and authority standards.

 

Qualifications/Competencies: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, finance, insurance, risk management, marketing, or a related field preferred; equivalent relevant work experience may be considered.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of commercial property and casualty underwriting experience preferred, with workers compensation underwriting experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience managing agency relationships, producer pipelines, territory plans, or assigned books of business preferred.
  • Professional insurance designation, such as CPCU, ARM, AU, CIC, or equivalent coursework, preferred but not required.
  • Strong technical knowledge of workers compensation underwriting, including exposure analysis, loss history review, experience modification analysis, pricing, risk selection, and account profitability.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage an assigned agency territory, develop producer relationships, and execute business development strategies that support profitable growth.
  • Strong insurance, business, and financial acumen with the ability to assess complex risks and make sound underwriting recommendations.
  • Ability to influence, negotiate, and build trust with internal stakeholders, agents, brokers, and insureds.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional partners, including claims, loss control, audit, operations, and underwriting leadership.
  • Strong understanding of insurance principles, rates, rules, forms, procedures, regulations, coverages, and business processes.
  • Ability to analyze complex administrative or business problems, evaluate alternatives, and recommend practical solutions.

 

Benefits:

  • We provide some benefits at no cost to the employee (Basic Life Insurance and AD&D at two times an employee’s annual salary, Short- and Long-term Disability coverage, and Employee Assistant Plan).
  • Employees will accrue 0.0769 hours of Paid Time Off (PTO) per paid hour, which may total 20 days a year. In addition, employees will also receive 10 paid holidays throughout the calendar year.

 

Salary Range:

  • $80,000.00 - $87,000.00 annually
  • Compensation may vary depending on skills, experience, education, and geographical location.
  • In addition to base salary, compensation may include an annual discretionary bonus.
