Under the direction of the Design Section Leader. This position performs a variety of engineering duties using computer-aided design and detailing systems (CADD). Develops and prepares bridge construction plans, reviews and verifies structural design details, and accepts construction documents with guidance from a registered professional engineer. Assists field personnel with construction issues related to bridges and structures.

This position may offer the ability to work remotely, within Arizona, based upon the department's business needs and continual meeting of expected performance measures.

Utilize computer-aided design and detailing systems (CADD) to perform a diverse range of engineering duties. Analyzes structural designs for bridges, earth retaining structures, hydraulic structures and highway signing and lighting support structures. Computes quantities of materials or services needed for construction projects. Calculates and compiles unit cost data and other information on bridges.

Reviews construction shop drawings and false work drawings. Attends field meetings to resolve bridge construction issues. May drive a State vehicle in the course of State business. Attends project team meetings and design field reviews and participates in problem solving and decision making. Attends professional seminars and conferences and compiles and disseminates highly technical information. Analyzes structures using state of the art computer software to determine load ratings.

Reviews and recommends approval of structural plans and supporting documents prepared by consulting engineers. Writes detailed bridge reports based on research, analysis and evaluation of complex engineering data.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

• Principles and practices of civil engineering as applied to the location,design, construction and maintenance of a state highway system.
• Agency organization and functions of the work units.
• Federal and State statutes and agency standards, rules and regulations applicable to bridge design.
• Safety practices and procedures.
• Structural detailing practices of CADD.

SKILL IN:

• Evaluation and interpretation of technical engineering records and reports. Skill in utilizing bridge engineering design and CADD software.
• Interpersonal relations and in oral and written communications.

ABILITY TO:

• Check or verify calculations on quantity summaries for highway construction bid items.
• To inspect construction in progress to assure conformance with specifications.
• Effectively utilize PC applications software.
• Examine and verify numeric data and specifications on source documents by recalculating computations using geometry or trigonometry.

A minimum of a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering

Must possess a Arizona Driver's license with a 39 month acceptable driving record - This position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job, and the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).
