As a Software Development Engineer IV, you will play a critical role in delivering highly complex, enterprise‑scale solutions by providing deep technical leadership, architectural direction, and hands‑on engineering expertise. This role combines advanced software development skills with strong communication and leadership capabilities to guide teams, influence technical decisions, and ensure solutions align with Premera’s strategic objectives, standards, and regulatory requirements.

This is a telecommuter position, working from home.

What you’ll do:

  • Design, develop, and implement AI/GenAI solutions using Azure AI services, including Azure OpenAI, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), vector search, and agent-based frameworks.

  • Integrate AI capabilities into enterprise applications by leveraging organizational knowledge sources such as Azure DevOps Wikis, documentation repositories, and other business systems.

  • Define and deliver technical solutions with a focus on architecture, scalability, performance, security, usability, and maintainability.

  • Lead feature development and provide technical direction throughout the software development lifecycle, ensuring alignment with business objectives and engineering standards.

  • Collaborate with engineering teams, architects, business partners, vendors, and customers to gather requirements, resolve technical challenges, and drive successful project outcomes.

  • Establish and enforce engineering best practices, including code reviews, documentation standards, testing strategies, and continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD) processes.

  • Embed security, governance, compliance, and regulatory controls into AI and DevOps solutions, ensuring adherence to company standards and architectural guidelines.

  • Oversee vendor-delivered solutions, including technical reviews, code quality assessments, and final sign-off to ensure high-quality deliverables.

  • Monitor project and operational metrics, analyze trends and performance indicators, and make data-driven recommendations to improve delivery efficiency and solution quality.

  • Drive engineering excellence through automation, continuous improvement, and effective quality assurance practices across cross-functional teams.

  • Ensure appropriate technical, architectural, and SDLC documentation is created, maintained, and approved for production implementations and support activities.

  • Serve as a technical leader and trusted advisor by mentoring engineers, sharing knowledge, fostering innovation, and promoting best practices across the organization.

  • Stay current with emerging technologies, industry trends, AI advancements, and Azure DevOps capabilities to continuously improve engineering effectiveness and business value.

What you’ll bring:

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field.

  • (8) years of software development experience with strong knowledge of the software development lifecycle and proficiency in one or more programming languages.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing and delivering cloud‑based solutions.

  • Hands‑on experience with Azure DevOps (Boards, Repos, Pipelines, Wiki).

  • Experience with Azure AI/OpenAI, including RAG patterns and prompt engineering.

  • Strong observability and operational excellence mindset.

  • Experience in healthcare or other highly regulated environments.

  • Familiarity with Premera technologies (e.g., Facets), where applicable.

  • Experience working in an Agile environment.

  • Experience with API and service‑based architectures.

  • Experience building or using automated testing frameworks.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated expertise delivering enterprise‑scale systems that solve complex business problems.

  • Deep hands‑on technical expertise in one or more core technologies, with architectural thinking across multiple domains.

  • Proven experience designing and delivering high‑performance, scalable, and reliable solutions in enterprise environments.

  • Strong collaborator with the ability to influence, align, and lead across differing perspectives.

  • Ability to continuously evolve technical skills and mentor less experienced engineers.

  • Experience leading implementation and deployment of complex enterprise systems.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for both technical and non‑technical audiences.

  • Demonstrated judgment in making sound technical tradeoffs aligned with short‑ and long‑term business needs.

  • Resilient, composed, and effective in navigating ambiguity and complex delivery environments.

The pay for this role will vary based on a range of factors including, but not limited to, a candidate’s geographic location, market conditions, and specific skills and experience.

The salary range for this role is posted below; we generally target up to and around the midpoint of the range.

National Salary Range:

$118,900.00 - $202,100.00

National Plus Salary Range:

$135,600.00 - $230,500.00

*National Plus salary range is used in higher cost of labor markets including Western Washington and Alaska.
