THE ROLE

The Senior IT Strategist is a senior individual contributor responsible for leading complex IT strategy and governance engagements for healthcare organizations. Reporting to the Director, IT Strategy, the role partners with executive and operational stakeholders to develop actionable strategies, governance frameworks, operating models, and transformation roadmaps.

This hands-on consulting role leads strategic workstreams, facilitates executive decision-making, and delivers evidence-based recommendations that drive business and technology outcomes. The Senior IT Strategist also contributes thought leadership, methodologies, and reusable intellectual property across the practice.

The Senior IT Strategist directs and manages the project resources assigned to the engagements they lead including consultants, analysts, and project team members with authority over task assignment, work prioritization, and performance oversight for the duration of those engagements.

FUNCTIONAL AND OPERATIONAL LEADERSHIP

  • Serve as a subject matter expert, providing strategic guidance on complex client challenges, industry trends, and service-line opportunities.

  • Contribute to the development and enhancement of methodologies, frameworks, tools, templates, and reusable intellectual property.

  • Partner with practice leadership to identify capability gaps, delivery improvements, market opportunities, and emerging client needs.

  • Support engagement success through quality assurance, knowledge sharing, mentoring, and leadership of assigned project resources.

ENGAGEMENT TYPES YOU WILL LEAD

  • Lead complex IT strategy engagements including strategic planning, business case development, options analysis, and roadmap creation.

  • Advise clients on governance, operating models, organizational effectiveness, sourcing strategies, financial management, performance measurement, and stakeholder engagement.

  • Deliver decision-ready solutions that drive operational excellence, value realization, and measurable business outcomes through assessments, KPI development, and transformation initiatives.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategy Engagement Leadership

  • Frame the strategic questions, decisions, analytical approach, and evidence requirements for assigned engagements and workstreams.

  • Lead client relationships for assigned work, building credibility with managers, directors, and senior leaders across IT, clinical, compliance, security, finance, and operations.

  • Plan and lead structured discovery through interviews, workshops, artifact review, data requests, benchmarking, and evidence synthesis.

  • Facilitate working sessions and decision forums that clarify tradeoffs, build alignment, and move stakeholders toward well-supported decisions.

  • Synthesize qualitative and quantitative evidence into defensible findings, strategic options, recommendations, and practical transition actions.

  • Maintain disciplined execution across scope, timeline, budget, risks, dependencies, and engagement economics; surface material issues early with practical mitigation options.

  • Manage the project resources assigned to engagements they lead, including staffing the workplan, assigning and prioritizing tasks, balancing workloads, directing day-to-day work, and providing performance oversight and input for the duration of the engagement.

Decision Artifacts and Deliverables

  • Create executive-ready strategy decks, narrative storylines, and decision memos with explicit options, tradeoffs, recommendations, and implications.

  • Design governance operating models, including charters, decision forums, RACI matrices, escalation paths, and annual governance calendars.

  • Develop KPI and KRI scorecards and reporting-pack templates with clear definitions, owners, thresholds, and cadence.

  • Build multi-year roadmaps with dependencies, sequencing rationale, decision gates, and transition plans.

  • Produce portfolio tools, including inventories, prioritization scoring models, value-versus-feasibility heatmaps, stop/start/continue recommendations, and 30/60/90 activation plans.

  • Develop financial and scenario models to support investment and operating decisions, including TCO, ROI, investment envelopes, and sensitivity ranges.

  • Translate findings into practical playbooks and templates that clients can operate on day one.

Quality, Methods, and Knowledge Assets

  • Apply a repeatable, decision-led delivery approach that maps every major output to a named decision, owner, forum, evidence requirements, and acceptance criteria.

  • Maintain evidence discipline through source traceability, as-of dating, and clear assumptions.

  • Lead quality assurance efforts for assigned engagements, ensuring analyses are sound, recommendations are supportable, and deliverables are clear, consistent, and executive-ready.

  • Use internal PMO standards and templates to maintain appropriate delivery discipline, decision traceability, risk visibility, and clean handoffs.

  • Build and govern reusable accelerators, including templates, rubrics, scoring models, workshop agendas, and draft SOW language.

Service-Line Growth and Business Development

  • Represent the IT Strategy function in qualified presales discovery, solution shaping, and proposal development.

  • Assess client needs and define proposed scope, deliverables, staffing approach, schedule, assumptions, dependencies, risks, and acceptance criteria.

  • Develop execution-focused SOW content and delivery estimates within established commercial and approval parameters.

  • Recommend delivery approaches, pricing inputs, and risk mitigations to practice leadership and account teams.

  • Identify follow-on opportunities and support appropriate transition from delivery insight to qualified opportunity discussion.

  • Contribute to service-line planning by monitoring market demand, recurring client needs, delivery economics, capability gaps, and opportunities for reusable offerings.

Performance Management

  • Serve as a trusted advisor and resource for consultants, analysts, and project teams seeking guidance on strategy methodologies, governance design, stakeholder engagement, and executive communications.

  • Share knowledge, best practices, tools, and lessons learned to advance the capabilities of the broader practice.

  • Provide informal coaching and constructive feedback to support professional growth and engagement success.

  • Contribute to onboarding, training, and knowledge-transfer activities as requested.

  • Promote consistent use of practice standards, delivery methodologies, and quality expectations.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience.

  • 10+ years of experience in IT strategy, management consulting, healthcare IT leadership, or a combination of these.

  • Demonstrated experience serving as a senior subject matter expert, advisor, or engagement leader on complex strategy, governance, transformation, or consulting initiatives.

  • Five or more years leading complex strategy engagements, major workstreams, or a defined consulting or strategy service area with direct stakeholder accountability.

  • Demonstrated experience leading multiple concurrent engagements or strategic workstreams, balancing priorities while maintaining delivery quality, stakeholder satisfaction, and business outcomes.

  • Demonstrated experience translating organizational goals and business objectives into actionable strategies, governance structures, operating models, and measurable outcomes.

  • Demonstrated experience taking strategy or governance work from problem framing and discovery through analysis, recommendation, executive decision, and handoff.

  • Strong client presence and judgment, including the ability to navigate difficult discussions, surface meaningful tradeoffs, and build alignment when information is incomplete.

  • Demonstrated ability to create executive-ready narratives and decision memos and present credibly to healthcare IT, clinical, operational, and financial leaders.

  • Experience navigating health-system governance and decision-making across clinical, operational, financial, and technology functions.

  • Strong facilitation skills with a track record of driving alignment and decisions in cross-functional groups.

  • Experience designing governance and operating models, including decision rights, forums, cadence, and accountability.

  • Working knowledge across multiple domains, including IT portfolio and investment governance, sourcing and vendor governance, AI and IT governance, and major platform modernization.

  • Advanced proficiency in PowerPoint and Excel, including structured analysis and financial modeling, plus strong Word skills for client-ready documentation.

  • Ability to lead multiple engagements or workstreams while preserving analytical depth, client responsiveness, quality, and delivery discipline.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Prior consulting experience in a healthcare-focused firm or a health-system strategy office.

  • Exposure to board or audit-committee reporting, risk registers, and executive scorecards.

  • Experience with AI governance or AI-related projects.

  • Familiarity with relevant frameworks and standards, such as ITIL, COBIT, NIST, ISO 27001, TOGAF, and Six Sigma, and healthcare regulatory expectations such as HIPAA and interoperability requirements.

  • Master’s degree, such as an MBA, MHA, MPH, or MS, or relevant certifications such as PMP, ITIL, Six Sigma, TOGAF, or an AI-related credential.

  • ·   Engagements maintain strong momentum through disciplined discovery, clear decision paths, proactive risk management, and clean handoffs.

  • ·   Reusable intellectual property reduces delivery effort and increases consistency across services.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

  • This role is primarily remote. Limited travel may be required for client-facing discovery workshops, executive sessions, or engagement kickoffs when the client requests onsite presence.

  • Typical travel expectations are low and will be discussed during the hiring process.
