Network Finance Director

The Network Finance Director serves as a key strategic partner to the Network’s administrative leadership team, providing expert financial direction, guidance, and operational support across the UCSF Health Network. This role places particular emphasis on the Community Hospitals, driving the optimization of financial systems, processes, and resources to shift from reactive reporting to a proactive, forward-looking finance function that supports operational excellence.

Initial key responsibilities include:

• Partner closely with Network administrative leaders to deliver strategic financial leadership, decision support, and actionable recommendations that align with organizational goals.
• Lead and strengthen financial performance at the community hospitals by maximizing the value of existing systems, tools, and data infrastructure.
• Oversee productivity and labor management initiatives, including workforce analytics, staffing efficiency, and cost-control strategies.
• Direct revenue cycle reviews and performance improvement efforts to enhance collections, reduce denials, and optimize cash flow.
• Co-own month-end close responsibilities, ensuring timely, accurate, and compliant financial close processes across the Network.
• Develop and deliver higher-level analytics, dashboards, and insights that enable proactive decision-making.
• Conduct ad-hoc business reviews, scenario modeling, and special projects to support strategic initiatives, volume growth, service-line performance, and operational efficiency.
• Promote a culture of financial accountability, internal controls, transparency, and continuous improvement throughout the Network.

This position is instrumental in elevating the financial maturity of the UCSF Health Network—particularly its community hospital portfolio—by translating data into strategy and ensuring the organization extracts maximum value from its people, processes, and systems.

This role serves as key strategist with the VP/CFO, Network in initiating and developing new financial strategic direction, long- and short-range plans and innovative initiatives. Has high level authority to make official commitments and to broadly represent the VP/CFO, Network’s interests across the organization. Responds to issues with little or no precedence. May manage and administer independent program(s), typically with Network Business Unit-wide impact, particularly within the Community Hospitals. May in the future manage professional staff handling diverse administrative functions such as human resources and budgetary planning. Uses advanced Finance concepts and organizational objectives to resolve highly complex issues. Regularly works on highly complex issues or problems which require analysis of unique issues / problems without precedent and / or structure. Exercises a high level of judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
• Minimum of fifteen (15) years of progressive/combined in healthcare finance 
• Advanced knowledge of the organization's processes, protocols and procedures.
• Advanced skills in short- and long-range planning, program and project management, facilitation and collaboration.
• Sound strategic thinking and consulting skills in guiding the organization toward workable strategies and solutions.
• Proven ability to focus on priorities, strategies, and vision.
• Advanced ability to coach, facilitate and influence people at all levels.
• Advanced ability to build and maintain relationships with a broad range of staff and members of the community.
• Knowledge of common organization-specific and other computer application programs.
• Financial analysis and reporting techniques.
• Demonstrates breadth and/or depth of professional/technical skills and capabilities required for position; shares knowledge; sets or contributes to the Company’s direction within area of expertise.
• Managing Expenses, Labor productivity and Finances: Knowledge of the principle and methodology of finance management and ability to use the functions, tools and processes needed to manage financial assets and liabilities throughout the organization. 
• Budget Management: Knowledge of the principles and methodology of budget management and ability to utilize the tools, techniques and procedures needed to establish and monitor budgets. 
• Financial Analysis: Knowledge of tools and approaches of financial analysis; ability to read, interpret and draw accurate conclusions from financial and numerical material. 
• Cost-Benefit Analysis: Knowledge of the principles and tools used in cost-benefit analysis and ability to analyze the purpose and scope of a producer, product, process, or project in terms of cost and benefits. 
• Financial Forecasting and Modeling: Knowledge of processes, tools and techniques of financial forecasting and modeling; ability to explore and evaluate alternative financial scenarios and results.
