The Head of Accounting & Tax will own the accuracy and integrity of the group's accounting, financial statements, and tax compliance. They will lead the accounting team, manage external advisers, and ensure all financial data is reconciled and compliant with regulatory standards.

About albo

albo offers financial products to individuals and small and medium businesses in Mexico. Our group includes a regulated electronic payment funds institution, operating subsidiaries and a UK holding company. Our business combines payments, lending, customer balances and subscription services.

About the role

We are looking for a Head of Accounting and Tax to own the accuracy, timeliness and integrity of the group’s accounting, financial statements and tax compliance. Reporting to the CFO, you will lead the accounting team and work closely with FP&A, Treasury, Legal, Compliance, Operations and Technology.

You will turn complex operational data into reliable financial information, maintain clear accounting policies and ensure that every material balance and judgment is supported. This role requires a leader who can manage the team and external advisers while personally reviewing reconciliations, resolving technical issues and delivering under firm deadlines.

What you will own

Monthly close and financial reporting

  • Deliver the monthly close by D+10, with clear responsibilities, cutoffs, review checkpoints and escalation of delays. Review accruals, journal entries and balance sheet reconciliations, and resolve aged or unexplained items.
  • Prepare entity and consolidated financial statements and reporting packages. Reconcile accounting actuals with FP&A’s financial model before management reporting, explain differences and maintain a consistent source of financial data.
  • Own intercompany reconciliations, eliminations, foreign currency translation and the consolidation of the UK holding company and Mexican entities. Assess the accounting and consolidation treatment of financing trusts and special purpose vehicles with advisers when needed.

Technical accounting and business transactions

  • Maintain documented IFRS group policies and the bridges to applicable Mexican statutory and regulatory accounting requirements. Prepare technical memos for material judgments and complex transactions.
  • Oversee lending accounting, including accrued interest, effective interest rates, fees, expected credit losses under IFRS 9, write-offs and recoveries. Reconcile loan servicing data, cash collections and portfolio balances to the general ledger.
  • Ensure accurate recognition and reconciliation of payment, interchange, subscription and other service revenues, settlement balances, customer funds and related costs. Partner with Treasury and Operations to maintain clear segregation and reconciliation of customer and corporate funds.
  • Own the accounting analysis and supporting schedules for debt and financing costs, investments, goodwill and intangible asset impairment, deferred taxes and share-based payments. Validate equity and stock option movements against supporting corporate and legal records.
  • Review new products, partnerships, acquisitions and funding arrangements before implementation to define accounting treatment, tax implications, data requirements and controls.

Tax and regulatory reporting

  • Own the Mexican tax calendar, accurate and timely filings and payments, accounting-to-tax reconciliations and supporting records. Oversee income tax, VAT, withholding taxes and tax balances, including recoverability and follow-up of refunds and credits.
  • Coordinate transfer pricing studies and documentation for intercompany services, licences, financing and other transactions. Work with Legal to ensure contracts, invoices and supporting evidence match the accounting and tax treatment.
  • Coordinate UK and cross-border tax matters with specialist advisers, including withholding taxes, treaty relief and lender documentation. Track requirements and escalate missing information or exposures to the CFO.
  • Own the financial and accounting components of applicable CNBV and Banco de México reporting, in coordination with Compliance. Reconcile submissions to the books, document reviews and retain evidence of timely filing.

External audits and internal controls

  • Lead the group’s annual audit process across Mexico and the UK. Agree a coordinated timetable, deliver complete supporting schedules, manage queries and ensure financial statements are ready for approval and filing within statutory deadlines.
  • Own audit readiness throughout the year: maintain an organised evidence repository, track outstanding requests and resolve technical matters early. Coordinate UK statutory filing with Legal and the responsible advisers.
  • Implement controls over cutoff, reconciliations, journal approvals, intercompany transactions, equity and stock options, and supporting documentation. Track audit findings and verify that corrective actions are implemented and effective.

Team leadership and systems

  • Develop the accounting team, define accountability and review standards, and ensure coverage of critical processes. Manage external accounting and tax providers with clear deliverables and deadlines.
  • Improve ERP workflows, chart of accounts and integrations between operational systems and accounting. Automate repeatable reconciliations and reporting while preserving data lineage, access controls and review evidence.

How success will be measured

  • A consistent D+10 close, reviewed balance sheet reconciliations and accounting actuals aligned with FP&A before reporting.
  • Timely tax, regulatory and statutory submissions, supported by complete records and clear ownership.
  • Audits delivered against an agreed timetable, with complete evidence and fewer recurring findings or late adjustments.
  • Material accounting judgments documented, reconciliation issues resolved and measurable progress in automation and team capability.

About you and what type of skills you'll need:

  • A degree in Accounting and at least eight years of relevant accounting, financial reporting and tax experience, including at least three years leading teams and owning the close and external audits.
  • Experience in a regulated Mexican financial institution, with practical knowledge of regulatory accounting and reporting. You can translate requirements into reliable processes and controls.
  • Strong IFRS knowledge and demonstrated experience preparing consolidated financial statements for a group with multiple entities. You can document and defend material accounting judgments with auditors.
  • Practical Mexican tax experience and the ability to manage transfer pricing and cross-border matters with specialist advisers.
  • Experience reconciling high volumes of transactions across operational systems, banks, subledgers and the general ledger. Strong Excel or Google Sheets skills and hands-on ERP experience.
  • Fluent Spanish and advanced professional English, including the ability to discuss technical accounting and audit matters and prepare written explanations for international stakeholders.
  • A track record of delivering accurate closes and audit milestones under tight deadlines. You communicate risks early, investigate discrepancies and follow issues through to resolution.

Experience that would be valuable

  • Direct experience with an IFPE, SoFiPo payments or consumer and SME lending, including IFRS 9 and loan portfolio reconciliations.
  • Experience with UK group audits and statutory accounts, financing trusts, warehouse facilities or other structured lending arrangements.
  • Experience with Oracle NetSuite, reconciliation platforms such as Simetrik, and automation or data tools such as SQL or business intelligence platforms.
  • Experience with SOFIPOs or banking accounting and regulatory reporting, acquisitions, goodwill impairment or employee stock option plans.
