AI Summary

You will lead a high-impact engineering team to foster innovation, mentor talent, and ensure technical sustainability for a modern commerce platform. Your role involves shaping engineering strategy, managing production stability, and collaborating with product and design teams to deliver exceptional retail experiences.

🧑‍💻 The Role

As an Engineering Manager at NewStore, you will lead a high-impact engineering team, fostering a culture of innovation, accountability, and collaboration. Your role extends beyond project execution - you’ll shape engineering strategy, mentor talent, and ensure long-term technical sustainability while driving the growth of our industry-leading, Omni-Channel Point of Sale platform. AI has changed how teams build, not what “good” means. Your job is to create the conditions that get us there.

You’ll lead a team of 4-8 engineers crafting solutions that empower retail brands to deliver exceptional shopping experiences across every channel, working closely with Product and Design as a triad against a common set of outcomes.

You help shape the architecture of a modern, scalable commerce platform while building the team that makes it happen. Ready to shape how millions of people shop?

If you thrive on building self-managed, high-performing teams, holding a high bar for quality, and growing engineers into the best version of themselves, this role is for you.

🚀 What You’ll Do

Experiment with both what you build and how you build it. When there’s an open question in process, tooling or product direction, build a version in days, measure it, keep what works and write down what didn’t.

Lead a team: Own the delivery, health and production stability of one engineering team, people and the agents they run, holding it accountable for results while building a culture people are proud of.

Own architecture within your domain: Ensure architecture is fit for purpose for your domain and that its consumed interfaces (APIs, messages) are aligned with the company target architecture. Own the path of adapting to the future of retail when the consumer is an agent rather than a person or a service. All trade-offs are informed, actively managed, discussed, and documented.

Own the hiring process and grow the team: Drive fast hiring of engineers of a very high standard, up to staff level, with interviews that assess how candidates work with AI tools and how well they evaluate the output, not only what they can write unaided. Set direction for Senior Engineers and keep them focused.

Reinvent how the team works: Treat the team’s shape and process as something you redesign, not inherit. Experiment with where agents replace, assist or get reviewed by engineers, measure it, and keep what works.

Deliver against ambiguity: Collaborate with Product and Design to align the team roadmap with company objectives, and support the team in structuring the work so it is easy to tackle in multiple streams.

Reshape engineering excellence: You understand pairing, TDD, contract and end-to-end testing, and continuous delivery, and how AI is changing or fits alongside these. You foster a culture of quality regardless of how the code was generated, and when possible you join the pairing sessions yourself.

Adapt to new challenges in platform reliability: Implement robust security measures and maintain high availability standards for mission-critical retail systems. Understand how you can shift the guarantee from “we understood every change” to “the system catches what we didn’t,” and decide where AI belongs in your own operations loop. Enable the team to find the answer.

Redefine tech health: In a well-running team, throughput is no longer the constraint; understanding and cost of ownership are. Find new ways to measure before making decisions, reinvest where AI improves the health of the system, and bring the team with you.

🤝 How We Work Together

We’re a team that values empowerment, collaboration, and ownership. We make decisions based on data, foster open discussion within and across teams, and manage complexity by adapting to new information.

Lead through context, not control: You create a space where it’s safe to fail, learn, and grow. You help engineers challenge each other, give direct feedback, and feel proud of how they build. That includes making it safe to say an AI-generated change isn’t understood well enough to ship, and to iterate on it instead of pushing it through.

Complexity management: Handle organizational and technical complexity before it impacts your teams.

DevOps mindset: Take full ownership of your team’s solutions, from strategic design to deployment and monitoring.

Focus on outcomes: Balance rapid delivery with maintainability. There are two customers for every line of code: our end users and the colleagues who work in it next. That balance holds no matter how fast the code was produced.

Cross-domain collaboration: Manage dependencies with other internal teams, promote knowledge sharing within and across squads, and balance team autonomy with domain alignment.

Honest coaching: Be direct with the people you manage. When someone is struggling, distinguish a tooling gap from a knowledge gap before deciding what the plan is.

Stay aware: All our managers stay technically current and can express it through code or architectural design when needed. Using AI tooling well makes this considerably more achievable, provided its limits are understood and accounted for.

🌟 A Day in Your World

Morning standup with your team, a design review with your senior engineers, roadmap planning with your product partner, a pairing session on a tricky change, a coaching 1:1, and solving problems that impact retail brands worldwide.

No two days are the same when you’re building the future of commerce.

📚 Your Story

Are you an engineering leader with a passion for building exceptional teams and holding a high bar for quality? Do you thrive in environments where you can grow engineers, own production, and keep a team fast without cutting corners? If so, then this Engineering Manager role is the perfect opportunity for you!

Leadership experience: 8+ years of software development with 3+ years managing an engineering team.

Technical depth: Strong background in modern software development practices, cloud platforms (preferably AWS), and distributed systems architecture. You understand the impact of AI usage on the patterns you know.

Hiring and growing: Proven track record hiring strong engineers quickly and coaching them, with honest feedback as the basis for growth.

Senior engineer leadership: Experience setting direction for Senior Engineers and keeping them engaged and focused. Experience managing a Staff Engineer is a plus.

Agile/XP knowledge: Understanding of agile methodologies, including eXtreme Programming, TDD, and continuous delivery practices, and a clear view of where AI-assisted development fits alongside (or changes) them without lowering the bar.

Technical depth that stays current: You can still read what your team ships, spot gaps, and demonstrate or direct with explanation when needed. You clearly understand how what is shipped connects to the strategy.

AI-era engineering judgment: You’ve led a team through adopting AI coding tools and can say concretely what it changed in throughput, quality, tech health and cost, and what it didn’t.

Stakeholder management: Strong relationships with product, design, and business stakeholders in previous roles.

Coaching: Natural ability to mentor engineers and build a self-managed team that owns decisions within clear guardrails.
