AI Summary

The Corporate Controller will oversee the accounting function, including month-end close, financial reporting, and audit management for a multi-entity company. They will also lead post-acquisition integration, manage revenue recognition, and mentor the accounting team to build scalable finance operations.

About the Company

One of our portfolio companies, an established professional services company, is seeking a Corporate Controller to join its finance team. The company works with a national base of clients spanning government, health, education, consumer, and banking. Following a recent acquisition, the company is combining two strong cultures into one platform built for continued growth, and is looking for a hands-on finance leader to help build the foundation for its next chapter.

Role Summary

The Corporate Controller owns the accounting function for a multi-entity, private equity-backed company and serves as the CFO's right hand on everything from month-end close to lender reporting to audit. This role turns a growing, recently combined business into one with a clean, consistent, and scalable finance operation: timely closes, reliable numbers, strong controls, and reporting that leadership, the board, lenders, and investors can trust.

This is not a "keep the lights on" accounting role. The near-term focus is strengthening and streamlining accounting processes, building controls that hold up in an audit, and owning the audit from start to finish. This person will also lead the accounting team and work directly with account and project management on project accounting. Longer term, the focus is building a finance function that supports organic growth, future acquisitions, and automation and AI efforts that help the team scale.

Core Responsibilities

Close, Consolidation & Financial Reporting

  • Lead the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close across multiple legal entities, including intercompany activity and consolidation
  • Prepare GAAP financial statements with clear flux analysis and commentary
  • Deliver monthly financial packages to the CFO and management team on a consistent, reliable schedule.
  • Own the balance sheet, including reconciliations, accruals, and reserves, with close attention to aging in AR, AP, WIP, and unbilled revenue

Revenue & Billing

  • Oversee revenue recognition under ASC 606 across retainers, fixed-fee projects, production, commissions, and technology fees
  • Apply and document principal vs. agent (gross vs. net) treatment for media and other pass-through costs
  • Oversee client billing, vendor payables, and pass-through cost reconciliations
  • Partner with account and project teams to review contracts and scopes of work for proper accounting treatment
  • Support job and client profitability reporting by service line

Cash & Banking

  • Serve as the primary liaison between the company and its banking partners
  • Support rolling cash flow forecasting and day-to-day cash management

Audit, Tax & Compliance

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for the annual financial statement audit, driving a timely audit with clean, well-supported schedules
  • Coordinate with outside tax advisors on federal, state, and local filings, including multi-state compliance
  • Develop, document, and enforce accounting policies and internal controls

Integration, Systems & M&A

  • Lead the finance side of post-acquisition integration, including chart of accounts alignment, entity consolidation, and process standardization
  • Support migration to and optimization of a Salesforce-based accounting platform, working closely with IT and operations
  • Support diligence, purchase accounting, and integration for future add-on acquisitions, including escrow and earnout tracking

Team Leadership

  • Lead, develop, and mentor the accounting team across AP, AR, billing, and collections. Build a lean, efficient team that prioritizes automation and process simplification over adding headcount.
  • Build a close calendar, checklists, and documented procedures that make the function repeatable and less dependent on any one person

Measuring Success

In the first 12 months, success looks like:

  • A consistent close calendar delivered in 15 business days or less, with a documented close playbook the team actually uses
  • In coordination with the CFO, lender, sponsor, and board packages delivered on time, every time
  • A timely (120 days or less) annual audit with minimal adjustments and no significant control findings
  • Clear, trusted working relationships with company leadership, department heads, auditors, and lenders

Long-term Role Evolution

We expect the right person to take on more strategic work over time, including FP&A support, deeper profitability analytics, M&A execution, and readiness for future capital events. For a high performer, there's a real path to a broader finance leadership role.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA strongly preferred
  • 8 to 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 2 years in a Controller or Assistant Controller role
  • Public accounting experience preferred
  • Experience in a professional services environment strongly preferred, including billing and gross vs. net revenue recognition
  • M&A integration experience, including system and process consolidation
  • Strong working knowledge of GAAP and ASC 606
  • Experience with Salesforce a plus; advanced spreadsheet skills required
  • Experience in a private equity-backed environment a plus
  • Experience with lender reporting and debt covenant compliance a plus
  • Hands-on, roll-up-your-sleeves approach with the ability to lead and develop a team
  • Strong communicator who can explain the numbers to non-finance leaders
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and dedicated to continuous improvement

Compensation: $140K to $165K base, depending on experience, plus benefits & 401k
