Role Overview

As a Tech Lead, you will take technical ownership of a software development team while remaining actively involved in hands-on engineering.

You will be responsible for defining the team’s technical direction, making architectural decisions, establishing development standards, and ensuring that software solutions are scalable, secure, reliable, and maintainable.

Working closely with Product Owners, Engineers, and other stakeholders, you will help translate product requirements into practical technical solutions and deliver value through small, frequent releases.

You will also play a key role in establishing AI-assisted development workflows, ensuring that AI-generated code meets engineering quality standards.

The ideal candidate combines strong software engineering expertise, architectural judgment, technical leadership, and a proactive approach to continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership & Software Architecture

• Lead the technical direction and engineering decisions of a software development team.
  
• Design and review software architecture, system components, and technical solutions.
  
• Make critical architectural decisions involving data models, system boundaries, security, and scalability.
  
• Evaluate and select appropriate technologies, frameworks, and architectural approaches.
  
• Ensure software solutions meet performance, reliability, security, and maintainability requirements.
  
• Identify architectural risks and propose practical improvements.
  
• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineers.
  

Hands-On Software Development

• Remain actively involved in software design, implementation, testing, and code reviews.
  
• Develop and maintain high-quality web applications and cloud-based services.
  
• Support engineers in solving complex technical problems.
  
• Establish and promote clean coding practices and maintainable software design.
  
• Lead by example through hands-on engineering contributions.
  
• Help improve the team’s technical capabilities and engineering effectiveness.
  

Engineering Quality & Development Standards

• Establish and improve code review standards, testing strategies, and engineering guidelines.
  
• Promote automated testing and continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD).
  
• Ensure appropriate logging, monitoring, and metrics are incorporated into software releases.
  
• Identify and manage technical debt.
  
• Evaluate proof-of-concept solutions and determine whether they are suitable for production deployment or require redesign.
  
• Continuously improve software quality, development efficiency, and system reliability.
  

AI-Assisted Engineering & Development Automation

• Introduce and optimize AI-assisted software development workflows.
  
• Use AI coding assistants such as Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, or similar tools in daily engineering activities.
  
• Establish processes for reviewing, testing, and validating AI-generated code.
  
• Define team-level standards to maintain software quality when using AI coding agents.
  
• Explore AI-assisted workflows for specification development, code generation, automated testing, and code reviews.
  
• Help engineers adopt AI-assisted development practices effectively and responsibly.
  

Product Collaboration & Delivery

• Work closely with Product Owners to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
  
• Break down complex development work into small, manageable tasks that can be delivered within short release cycles.
  
• Support technical estimation, prioritization, and delivery planning.
  
• Identify technical risks, dependencies, and potential delivery blockers.
  
• Communicate technical decisions and trade-offs clearly to engineering and business stakeholders.
  
• Constructively challenge requirements and propose better technical approaches when appropriate.
  

Engineering Mentorship & Team Development

• Mentor engineers and support their technical growth.
  
• Improve the team’s ability to make sound technical decisions independently.
  
• Encourage knowledge sharing, technical discussions, and collaborative problem-solving.
  
• Promote a culture of ownership, continuous learning, and engineering excellence.
  
• Help establish development practices that improve team productivity and software quality.
  

Requirements

Professional Experience

• 7+ years of professional experience designing and developing web applications or cloud-based services.
  
• Proven experience serving as a Technical Lead or equivalent, including responsibility for software architecture and technology selection.
  
• Strong hands-on programming skills in at least one modern language, such as:

• Experience building and operating systems on cloud platforms such as AWS, Google Cloud, or Microsoft Azure.
  
• Experience establishing or improving automated testing, CI/CD processes, and code review practices.
  
• Ability to make architectural decisions and guide engineers through complex technical challenges.
  

AI-Assisted Development

• Practical experience using AI coding assistants such as Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, or similar tools in daily development.
  
• Ability to critically review, test, and validate AI-generated code.
  
• Experience or capability in establishing team-level processes that ensure the quality of AI-generated software.
  
• Understanding of how AI-assisted development can improve engineering productivity without compromising software quality.
  

Technical Leadership & Communication

• Strong technical leadership and decision-making capabilities.
  
• Ability to communicate effectively with Product Owners, Engineers, and Business stakeholders.
  
• Experience translating business requirements into technical designs and implementation plans.
  
• Ability to provide technical guidance, mentorship, and constructive feedback.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Domain-Driven Design (DDD), C4 Model, or similar architectural approaches.
  
• Experience designing or developing applications integrating LLMs or AI agents.
  
• Knowledge of observability practices, including logging, metrics, tracing, and SRE principles.
  
• Understanding of security architecture, authentication, authorization, and vulnerability management.
  
• Experience working with complex industry-specific data platforms.
  
• Ability to communicate technical topics in English.
  
• Japanese language proficiency equivalent to JLPT N2 or higher is a plus.
  

Benefits

Employment Type: Full-time employee

Annual Salary: ¥9,000,000 – ¥12,000,000 (depending on experience and qualifications)

Remote Work: Remote-first within Japan (occasional office attendance may be required)

Flexible Working Hours: Yes

Core Time: 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM

Standard Working Hours: 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM (7.5 working hours per day)

Salary Review: Once per year

Bonuses: Twice per year (March and September)

Holidays: Weekends + Japanese National Holidays

Annual Holidays: Approximately 122 days per year
