We are looking for a Senior Data Architect to lead the modernization of legacy ETL workloads into scalable cloud lakehouse architectures on Azure.

This role combines architecture ownership, hands-on technical analysis, and guidance for up to three engineers or developers working simultaneously. You will investigate existing production workloads, define migration patterns, and make design decisions when requirements or documentation are incomplete.

You will also provide technical oversight within an AI-assisted modernization workflow, validating automated analysis, approving implementation plans, and resolving exceptions that require human judgment. Clear, auditable documentation and accountability for technical decisions are central to the role.

Location: Remote, open to candidates based in Mexico and Latin America.
Language: English required for technical discussions, collaboration, and documentation.

Requirements

Main responsibilities

• Analyze legacy production workloads: Reverse engineer Alteryx workflows, SSIS packages, and SQL Server jobs to identify actual behavior, undocumented dependencies, historical fixes, and implicit business logic.
• Validate automated analysis: Audit reports generated by analysis agents against original source artifacts, resolving discrepancies, omissions, and unsupported assumptions.
• Own cloud architecture decisions: Define the target lakehouse architecture and establish ingestion patterns, data types, partitioning strategies, naming conventions, and scalability standards.
• Define governance and security: Establish data modeling, lineage, access, and governance practices, including security policies in Unity Catalog.
• Approve implementation plans: Review and formally approve documented design plans, including plan.md, before authorizing automated code generation.
• Resolve technical escalations: Act as the final technical authority for exceptions, business ambiguities, and limitations of the multi-agent system flagged as requiring human intervention.
• Guide the engineering team: Provide technical direction, review implementation approaches, and unblock up to three engineers or developers simultaneously.
• Approve integrations: Serve as a required technical reviewer for pull requests targeting protected branches such as preprod and main.
• Maintain decision traceability: Document assumptions, alternatives, trade-offs, and approvals so architecture decisions can be reviewed and audited.

Required experience and technical skills

• Senior-level experience in data engineering and data architecture, with direct ownership of cloud architecture design decisions.
• Demonstrated experience leading the modernization of legacy ETL workloads into lakehouse architectures.
• Hands-on experience with Apache Spark in production and PySpark for data processing and transformation.
• Strong knowledge of Delta Lake, Medallion architecture, lakehouse patterns, and data warehouse concepts.
• Experience with Azure cloud data platforms.
• Strong working knowledge of SQL Server, T-SQL, and SSIS, including the ability to investigate existing ETL logic and dependencies.
• Experience with data modeling, data governance, and data lineage.
• Working knowledge of Azure DevOps, Git-based collaboration, CI/CD, and pull request reviews.
• Experience providing technical leadership to engineers or developers; formal people management experience is not required.
• Ability to make sound decisions with incomplete information, validate assumptions, and document the reasoning behind technical choices.
• Strong communication skills to explain design decisions, clarify business rules, and coordinate implementation.
• English proficiency sufficient to participate independently in technical discussions and produce clear documentation.

Nice to have — non-blocking

• Hands-on experience with Databricks and Unity Catalog.
• Experience analyzing or migrating Alteryx workflows.
• Experience with streaming technologies such as Solace, Kafka, or Lakeflow.
• Broader DevOps experience supporting data platform delivery.
• Experience with SAST controls and vulnerability management tools, such as Fluid Attacks or similar platforms.
• Experience reviewing AI-generated analysis or code within an engineering workflow.
