The auditor will conduct comprehensive reviews of personal injury case files and financial transactions to ensure accuracy, compliance, and procedural integrity. They will identify discrepancies, prepare detailed audit reports, and collaborate with legal and accounting teams to implement corrective actions and process improvements.
About the Role
We are seeking a meticulous, experienced, and analytically sharp Personal Injury Case & Financial Auditor to join our client's legal operations team. In this dual-function role, you will be responsible for auditing both the integrity of active and closed case files and the accuracy of all financial transactions associated with personal injury cases — including medical billing, settlement disbursements, cost advances, and lien resolutions.
This role is critical to the firm's quality control, compliance, and financial accountability. You will work cross-functionally with attorneys, case managers, paralegals, and accounting staff to identify errors, inconsistencies, and inefficiencies — and recommend corrective action.
Key Responsibilities
Case File Auditing
Conduct thorough audits of active and closed personal injury case files to ensure completeness, accuracy, and compliance with firm standards
Verify that all required documentation is present and properly executed: retainer agreements, medical authorizations, accident reports, medical records, demand letters, settlement agreements, and closing statements
Review case timelines to ensure deadlines, statutes of limitations, and court-ordered dates were properly tracked and met
Identify missing documents, procedural gaps, or compliance issues and report findings to supervising attorneys
Audit case notes and case management system entries for accuracy, completeness, and consistency
Prepare detailed audit reports with findings, risk assessments, and recommended corrective actions
Track resolution of audit findings and follow up to confirm corrective measures have been implemented
Financial Auditing
Audit all financial transactions related to personal injury cases: cost advances, medical bill payments, settlement disbursements, attorney fees, and lien payoffs
Review and reconcile settlement statements and disbursement sheets to ensure all figures are accurate, complete, and properly authorized
Verify that medical lien reductions and payoffs are correctly calculated and documented prior to disbursement
Audit invoices from medical providers, expert witnesses, investigators, and third-party vendors for accuracy and proper approval
Identify billing discrepancies, duplicate charges, unauthorized expenses, or miscalculations and escalate findings immediately
Ensure compliance with state bar trust accounting rules and IOLTA requirements where applicable
Coordinate with accounting and bookkeeping staff to resolve discrepancies and implement financial controls
Quality Control & Process Improvement
Identify recurring patterns of error, inefficiency, or non-compliance across case files and financial records
Develop and maintain audit checklists, templates, and standard operating procedures for both case and financial audits
Collaborate with team leads, case managers, and attorneys to implement process improvements based on audit findings
Assist in training staff on documentation standards, billing accuracy, and compliance requirements
Maintain a detailed audit log and reporting dashboard to track firm-wide audit performance over time
