We are seeking a Remote Labor Relations Manager.

*CA and AZ based candidates highly preferred.

The Labor Relations Manager is responsible for planning, directing, and administering all labor relations activities across the organization’s multiple union-represented accounts located across various states, all of which employ hourly, non-exempt personnel under collective bargaining agreements (CBAs). As the sole incumbent in this function, the Labor Relations Manager holds end-to-end accountability for collective bargaining, contract administration, grievance and arbitration management, union relationship management, and labor law compliance across all assigned accounts and jurisdictions, and will scale this function as the organization’s union account portfolio grows. This is a remote position that requires regular multi-state travel to account locations to fulfill essential job functions.

Responsibilities:

  • Supervisory Responsibilities:

    • This position has no direct reports and is classified as an individual contributor role.
    • The Labor Relations Manager exercises significant functional authority and advisory influence over site/account managers and supervisors company-wide on labor relations matters, contract compliance, and disciplinary process.

    Duties/Responsibilities:

    • Collective Bargaining & Contract Administration: Serve as lead negotiator for new contracts, renewals, and re-openers across all union accounts; maintain a master tracking system of all CBA expiration dates, wage/benefit re-openers, and negotiation timelines; interpret and administer the terms of each CBA, advising site/account management on contractual rights, obligations, and past practice; and draft, review, and finalize contract language, side letters, and memoranda of understanding (MOUs).
    • Grievance & Dispute Resolution: Manage the grievance procedure end-to-end at all accounts, including intake, investigation, response drafting, and company representation through each step up to and including arbitration; partner with outside labor counsel on arbitration strategy and hearing representation; and track grievance trends by account to identify systemic issues or contract-language gaps requiring correction in future bargaining.
    • Union Relationship Management: Serve as the primary company liaison to all union locals and business agents representing the company’s accounts; lead or support labor-management committee meetings, information requests (RFIs), and ongoing communication between union representatives and account leadership; and monitor union organizing activity in non-represented parts of the business and advise leadership on positive employee relations strategies.
    • Compliance & Risk Management: Ensure company practices comply with the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) and applicable state-specific labor laws in every jurisdiction in which the organization operates a union account; respond to unfair labor practice (ULP) charges, NLRB filings, and related regulatory inquiries in coordination with legal counsel; and maintain current knowledge of federal and state labor law developments and proactively communicate impacts to leadership.
    • Training & Internal Advisory: Train and coach site/account managers and frontline supervisors on contract compliance, grievance avoidance, disciplinary process under just-cause standards, and effective communication with hourly, union-represented employees; act as the internal expert resource for any labor relations question arising at any account; and develop tools, templates, and job aids so that field managers can operate consistently with contractual requirements.
    • Reporting & Strategy: Provide regular reporting to senior leadership on labor relations metrics, including grievance volume and resolution, arbitration outcomes, contract cost impacts, and upcoming negotiation timelines; develop and recommend enterprise-wide labor relations strategy, including standardization opportunities across the account portfolio; and support workforce and labor-cost planning by modeling the financial impact of proposed contract terms.
    • Performs other related duties and special projects as necessary or assigned.

Skills/Abilities:

  • Expert knowledge of labor relations principles, collective bargaining practices, and grievance/arbitration procedures.
  • Strong negotiation, conflict-resolution, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with hourly employees, union representatives, and senior leadership.
  • Ability to interpret and apply contract language, statutes, and regulations accurately and consistently.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills sufficient to independently manage competing deadlines across a multi-account, multi-state portfolio.
  • Ability to exercise sound, independent judgment and discretion on matters with legal and financial risk to the organization.
  • Proficiency with standard office/HRIS software and labor relations case-tracking tools.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Labor Relations, Industrial Relations, Business Administration, or a related field; equivalent professional experience may substitute for the degree requirement.
  • SHRM-SCP, SPHR, or equivalent labor relations certification preferred.
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of progressive labor relations experience, including direct experience negotiating collective bargaining agreements and managing grievance and arbitration processes.
  • Demonstrated experience independently managing labor relations for a multi-site, multi-state union portfolio as a sole practitioner, without a supporting labor relations team.
