JOB TITLE
Integration Solutions Engineer
ROLE DETAILS
EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Salary Exempt
WORK LOCATION: Remote
REPORTS TO: Chief Technology Officer
POSITION OVERVIEW
AvatarFleet is a growing SaaS company in the regulated transportation industry, focused on solving complex problems through thoughtful software, strong client partnerships, and disciplined execution.
This role sits within the engineering organization and owns the technical front door for every partner integration. Many of our integration partners are early-stage: documentation is often incomplete or out of sync, and partners are sometimes building their side of the API while we build ours. Today, engineers absorb that uncertainty. This role removes it by proving out each partner API, owning the vendor relationship, and validating feasibility against product requirements before any integration reaches a sprint. By the time work is declared "engineering ready," the API is verified with working requests, the partner has a named technical contact and support channel on standby, and this role stands ready as the subject matter expert on the integration, its data, and its capabilities.
This is a technical role that works in close partnership with Product. For integration work, Product will often engage this role directly as its primary technical counterpart, rather than the backend engineering team. The ideal candidate is product minded, thinks in terms of customer outcomes rather than endpoints, and sees this role as a foundation for growth toward product management or technical product ownership.
POSITION OBJECTIVE
Ensure every integration enters engineering fully de-risked: the partner API validated hands-on, gaps between product requirements and API capabilities identified and resolved early, and the partner relationship established and responsive. On an ongoing basis, serve as the integration subject matter expert supporting Tier II, intercepting integration-related support issues and distinguishing configuration, data, partner-side, and code defects before engineering engages.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
Partner & Vendor Liaison
- Own the technical relationship with each integration partner; establish and maintain named technical contacts and support channels
- Attend and run partner technical calls so engineers do not have to
- Escalate and chase down partner-side blockers, sandbox access, credentials, and documentation corrections
- Maintain a vendor "reality file" per partner: where docs are wrong, undocumented behaviors, rate limits, and quirks
API Discovery & Validation
- Perform hands-on exploration of every partner API (Postman/curl) before engineering touches it
- Validate auth flows first-hand (OAuth grants, SAML/SSO, API keys, token refresh), pagination, throttling, error semantics, webhook behavior, and sandbox vs. production differences
- Verify the API can actually do what the PRD assumes, with evidence: working requests and sample payloads
- Produce a working Postman collection plus annotated findings as a deliverable for each integration
Feasibility & Product Alignment
- Serve as Product’s primary technical counterpart for integrations; field integration questions that would otherwise go to backend engineering
- Review PRDs against confirmed API capabilities before sprint commitment; flag gaps early
- Where gaps exist, propose viable alternatives that still meet the customer need, working with product to adjust scope
- Provide effort and risk signals to product for prioritization
- Help product write technically accurate acceptance criteria and edge-case requirements
- Contribute to integration roadmap sequencing based on partner readiness
- Engineering Enablement
- Serve as the on-call API subject matter expert during implementation; answer questions same-day or chase the answer from the vendor
- Deliver an "integration brief" per project: auth, endpoints, field mappings, pagination, known quirks, sample payloads, and open questions resolved
- Keep a reusable internal knowledge base of integration patterns across payroll/HRIS, TMS, telematics, LMS, and job boards
Support & Triage (Tier II Partnership)
- Intercept integration-related support issues alongside Tier II support; resolve directly where possible
- Reproduce and triage integration defects to confirm whether an issue is configuration, data, partner-side, or a code defect before an engineer engages
- Serve as the ongoing SME on each live integration: its data, behaviors, and capabilities
Process Ownership
- Own the discovery-gate checklist: no integration enters a sprint without validated auth, confirmed capabilities, and a signed-off integration brief
- Track partner API changes and deprecations and give engineering advance warning
ROLE BOUNDARIES
- This role defines what the API can do; product defines what the customer needs; engineering defines how it is built
- This role does not author PRDs or ship production code
GROWTH PATH
This role is deliberately positioned at the intersection of engineering, product, and partners. A successful candidate will build deep fluency in customer needs, requirements definition, feasibility trade-offs, and roadmap sequencing, and is expected to pursue growth toward product management, technical product ownership, or solutions architecture.

- Highly proficient in Postman or similar API exploration and testing tooling
- Able to read code (Python, JavaScript, or similar); shipping production code is not required
- Former integration engineer, solutions engineer, or sales engineer who has drifted product-ward is the ideal profile
- Strong written communication: the integration brief is the product of this role
- Product minded: frames technical findings in terms of customer outcomes and viable alternatives, not just constraints
- Comfortable driving external partners to resolution, including immature vendors within complete or shifting APIs
- Skilled at structured troubleshooting and defect triage across systems
- Python programming ability is a plus, not a requirement
- Domain exposure to HRIS/payroll, TMS, telematics, or transportation compliance is a plus, not a requirement
