The Insurance Accounting Manager leads the preparation of statutory financial statements and ensures compliance with NAIC and state insurance regulations. This role oversees investment accounting, actuarial reporting, and coordinates annual statutory audits and state examinations.
Overview
The Insurance Accounting Manager is responsible for ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of statutory financial reporting, investment accounting, and actuarial reporting while maintaining compliance with NAIC and regulatory requirements. This role oversees critical accounting and financial reporting functions supporting our insurance operations. The ideal candidate is a proactive leader with strong technical accounting knowledge and experience in the insurance industry.
Responsibilities
- Lead the preparation and filing of quarterly and annual statutory financial statements (NAIC Blue Book) and related supplemental schedules.
- Ensure compliance with statutory accounting principles (SAP), NAIC requirements, and applicable state insurance regulations.
- Manage investment accounting, including accounting for fixed income securities, equities, and investment-related reconciliations.
- Prepare and review actuarial reporting, including reserve analyses and supporting documentation.
- Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules related to insurance operations.
- Support annual statutory audits and state insurance examinations by coordinating audit requests and preparing supporting documentation.
- Assist with regulatory reporting, including premium taxes, risk-based capital (RBC) reporting, and other statutory filings as needed.
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, reporting accuracy, and internal controls.
- Mentor and develop accounting staff while fostering a culture of continuous improvement and collaboration.
- Partner with finance leadership on special projects, system implementations, and process improvement initiatives.
- Ensuring that the financial activities of the organization take place as per schedule.
- Fosters a collaborative teamwork environment, positively influences others to achieve results that are in the best interest of the organization.
- Works to ensure compliance of company, federal, and state guidelines are maintained at all times.
- Actively supports and complies with all components of the compliance program, including, but not limited to, completion of training and reporting of suspected violations of law and Company policy.
- To work remotely, it is expected you will have a reliable, nonpublic high-speed internet connection with sufficient bandwidth to participate in all work-related activities. Any interruptions in service should be immediately reported to your manager.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required; CPA preferred.
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including insurance accounting and statutory reporting.
- Strong knowledge of Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP) and NAIC reporting requirements.
- Experience preparing/reviewing statutory financial statements (Blue Book) required.
- Experience with investment accounting and financial reporting.
- Familiarity with actuarial reporting and reserve processes.
- Strong understanding of GAAP and the differences between GAAP and SAP reporting.
- Advanced Excel skills and experience with ERP and insurance administration systems.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting regulatory deadlines.
- Customer driven focus, both internal and external.
- Ability to lift approximately (25) pounds unassisted using appropriate lifting techniques and/or devices.
