Summary

The ERM Analyst supports the continued growth and maturity of Symetra's Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) program. Working closely with ERM team members and business partners across the organization, this role helps identify, assess, monitor, and communicate risks that could impact the Company's strategic objectives.

This position provides an opportunity to develop a broad understanding of Symetra's business, governance framework, and risk profile while building relationships across multiple business areas. The ERM Analyst contributes to key ERM processes, supports ongoing program improvements, and helps ensure risk information is meaningful, timely, and actionable for decision makers.

Responsibilities

Risk Governance & Program Support – 25%

  • Support the maintenance of ERM governance documentation, including the ERM Framework, ERM Policy, Risk Taxonomy, procedures, and related materials.
  • Contribute to the ongoing improvement of ERM processes, tools, and documentation.
  • Assist with special projects that strengthen ERM capabilities and operational efficiency.
  • Promote awareness of ERM by supporting cross-functional initiatives and fostering collaboration with business partners.
  • Coordinate meetings, follow up on action items, and assist in tracking progress of ERM initiatives.

Risk Assessment & Reporting – 25%

  • Support enterprise-wide risk assessments by coordinating with business areas and risk owners to identify, evaluate, and document key risks and mitigation strategies.
  • Assist in maintaining Symetra's enterprise risk taxonomy and related documentation.
  • Monitor emerging risks, industry developments, and regulatory trends, escalating observations to ERM leadership as appropriate.
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of risk assessment methodologies and supporting documentation.

Risk Reporting & ORSA Support – 25%

  • Prepare reports, dashboards, presentations, and other materials used for Enterprise Risk Committee meetings and other governance forums.
  • Support the preparation and coordination of Symetra's annual Own Risk and Solvency Assessment (ORSA) Report by drafting content, gathering information from business partners, and maintaining supporting documentation.
  • Assist with the development of meaningful risk reporting that communicates key risks, trends, and mitigation activities.
  • Help ensure ERM documentation and reporting remain accurate, organized, and current.

Corporate Insurance Program – 25%

  • Provide ongoing administrative support for the Company's corporate insurance program, including responding to coverage-related questions, maintaining insurance records, coordinating with brokers, and other insurance-related requests.
  • Coordinate activities supporting the Company's annual corporate insurance renewal process.

Education Required

4 year college degree in a relevant field such as Business, Finance, Accounting, Risk Management, Economics, or Actuarial Science

Minimum Years Of Work Related Experience Required

1-3 years of relevant professional experience in Risk Management, Internal Audit, Compliance, Finance, Accounting, Actuarial, Data Analytics, or a related business discipline.  Relevant internship experience will also be considered.

Education/Experience/License/Training/Skills PREFERRED

  • Coursework or experience related to ERM
  • Experience with reporting, data visualization, or business intelligence tools (e.g., Power BI or similar platforms).
  • Familiarity with process improvement methodologies or modern productivity and automation tools.
  • Experience within the insurance or broader financial services industry.

Works under general guidance while exercising sound judgment within established procedures. Contributes to departmental objectives through accurate analysis, thoughtful recommendations, and reliable execution of core ERM processes.

Job Complexity

Performs professional-level analytical work involving multiple business functions and risk disciplines. Applies established ERM methodologies to support risk identification, assessment, reporting, and governance activities while developing broader knowledge of ERM concepts.

Developing knowledge of ERM principles, governance practices, and the insurance industry. Builds technical and business expertise through participation in cross-functional initiatives and continuous learning. Demonstrates initiative in identifying opportunities to improve processes and enhance the effectiveness of the ERM program.

Reporting Structure

Works under general supervision while progressively assuming greater responsibility and independence as experience develops.

Contact with Others

Works closely with ERM team members, business unit risk owners, and subject matter experts throughout the organization. Regularly collaborates across departments to gather information, support risk assessments, and prepare materials for management and governance committees. May work directly with auditors, insurance brokers, and vendors.
