Job Description:

About the Role

As a key member of the UK Retail Operations Leadership Team, you’ll play an important role in shaping and delivering our business and local strategies, balancing strong day-to-day performance with change and growth. You’ll lead the safe and effective operation of around 100 company-owned stores, working through approximately five Area Leaders and supporting around 2,500 store colleagues.

You’ll be responsible for delivering strong people, customer, financial and operational performance, while maintaining high operational standards and improving profitability. With a clear understanding of customer needs, you’ll help influence product and service development and work collaboratively across the wider M&C UK business to support the continued growth of our company-owned network.

Your leadership will help drive our four core priorities: safe operational excellence, being first choice for our customers, people leadership, development and engagement, and financial delivery and growth.

Key Accountabilities

You’ll advise a team of around five Area Managers, setting the direction for your district and crafting a strong culture of safety, customer service, commercial performance and colleague development. Working closely with the UK Retail Operations Director and wider M&C leadership team, you’ll help translate our retail strategy into consistent execution across all areas and stores.

  • Drive sales, profitability and operational performance across the district, using key performance indicators and management information to identify trends and take action.
  • Put the customer at the heart of the business, mentoring Area Managers to deliver a consistently high-quality customer experience across all stores.
  • Own the district people plan, including succession planning, talent development, recruitment and selection, performance management, and supporting the DE&I agenda.
  • Establish a culture of operational excellence, ensuring compliance with legislation, company policies, safety requirements and operating standards.
  • Ensure effective implementation of key safety, people, customer and operational programmes and initiatives across all areas and stores.
  • Partner with Central Operations, Retail Coaches and other teams to lead change, deliver balanced business improvements and successfully implement strategic projects.
  • Lead the implementation of transformation activity across the district, working with portfolio, transformation, marketing, asset and operations teams to support successful site conversions and upgrades.
  • Ensure labour models, scheduling controls and optimisation processes are used effectively, supporting the right people being in the right place at the right time.
  • Monitor competitor activity and share relevant insights with central support teams.
  • Provide broader business support when required, including taking ownership of specific projects and supporting emergency or critical situations.

Crucial Experience and Job Requirements

You’ll be an experienced retail leader who can bring together strong commercial thinking, people leadership and customer focus. You’ll be comfortable leading through others, crafting strategy and turning performance data into clear actions.

  • Significant experience leading high-performing, customer-focused teams, ideally including field-based leadership.
  • Strong retail experience, ideally within fast-paced convenience, roadside retail or a similar FMCG environment.
  • Proven track record to mentor, empower and develop others, including managing performance effectively.
  • Strong commercial awareness with the ability to interpret financial information, KPIs and performance trends and translate them into clear actions.
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills, with the ability to work effectively across different levels of an organisation.
  • Experience shaping and delivering business strategy.
  • Self-motivated and performance-driven, with a strong passion for retail.

Desirable

Experience within roadside retail, store and field-based leadership, or a large and complex organisation would be beneficial. Exposure to senior leadership environments and working collaboratively across multiple functions would also be valuable.
