The opportunity

WELLSTAR, a majority-owned subsidiary of WELL Health Technologies Corp, is a high-growth SaaS company with a focused objective of reshaping healthcare through digital enablement. Our innovative solutions are designed to streamline care delivery, integrate healthcare systems and improve patient outcomes.

Reporting to the VP, Product Management, we are hiring a Director, UI/UX Design to lead the design function for the Clinical Platform Group. As our new Director, UI/UX Design, you will lead and develop an established team of designers while owning the quality, consistency, and evolution of the end-to-end product experience. You will set the design direction for a modern, AI-first EMR platform, strengthen user research and design practices, and ensure the needs of clinicians remain central to how the product evolves. Working as a peer to Product and Engineering leadership, you will bring greater structure and consistency to how teams collaborate from problem definition and discovery through design, development, and release.

This is a remote-first role open to candidates anywhere in Canada, with occasional travel for team on-sites and clinic visits.

Shape an AI-first healthcare experience. You will help define how clinicians interact with AI in a product they rely on to deliver care. From how AI-generated suggestions are presented to how confidence, transparency, and clinician control are built into the experience, you will influence some of the most important design questions facing Nexus AI EMR as the platform evolves.

Build better ways of working. You will have the opportunity to strengthen and mature an existing design practice rather than build one from the ground up. You will refine research, design processes, cross-functional collaboration, and the design system, creating the structure that helps designers do their best work and enables Product, Design, and Engineering to move forward together.

What you will do:

• Lead and develop the design team. You will coach and support an established team of designers, creating clear ownership, providing meaningful feedback, and helping each person build on their strengths and grow. You will foster a collaborative critique culture and create the conditions for the team to consistently deliver high-quality work.
• Own the end-to-end product experience. You will be accountable for the quality, consistency, and coherence of the Clinical Platform Group product experience across clinical and administrative workflows. You will establish and uphold a high design standard, incorporating accessibility and clinical safety considerations into how experiences are designed and delivered.
• Shape AI-assisted experiences. You will set the design direction for how AI is integrated into clinical workflows, including how suggestions are surfaced, confidence and provenance are communicated, and clinicians remain in control. You will help ensure AI-enabled experiences are practical, intuitive, and designed around the realities of clinical care.
• Strengthen how Design, Product, and Engineering work together. You will partner closely with Product and Engineering leaders to bring design into problem definition, discovery, refinement, and delivery. You will improve handoffs and feedback loops so requirements, designs, edge cases, and intended experiences are clearly understood and carried through to what is released.
• Evolve design practices and systems. You will refine the design process from intake and discovery through critique, handoff, and design QA, keeping it structured without creating unnecessary complexity. You will champion the design system, patterns, documentation, and tools that help the team work efficiently and deliver a consistent experience.
• Bring users closer to product decisions. You will establish a sustainable approach to user research, including interviews and engagement with clinics, and ensure insights are shared effectively across Design, Product, and Engineering. You will help turn what the team learns from clinicians and customers into meaningful improvements to the product and roadmap.

What you bring:

• The design leadership experience. You have experience leading and developing product designers, including coaching, providing meaningful feedback, supporting career development, and managing performance. You know how to assess the strengths of an established team, build trust, and create the clarity and support people need to do their best work.
• The product design expertise. You have designed and shipped complex, workflow-heavy software where usability, accuracy, and attention to detail matter. You bring strong design judgment and can critically evaluate work, challenge assumptions, and raise the quality and consistency of the user experience without imposing a rigid design philosophy.
• The ability to evolve a design practice. You have improved how a design team operates, whether through stronger discovery and research practices, critique and review, design systems, handoffs, or design QA. You can introduce structure without unnecessary process and understand how to measure whether changes are making the team and the product better.
• The cross-functional approach. You have worked closely with Product and Engineering teams in an agile product environment and understand how design fits into discovery, backlog refinement, sprint planning, development, and release. You can influence peers and senior stakeholders, communicate design decisions and trade-offs clearly, and build alignment around the user experience.
• The curiosity for AI-enabled design. You are comfortable exploring AI-assisted design tools and bring a thoughtful perspective on where they can improve speed and effectiveness without compromising craft or consistency. Experience designing AI or LLM-powered products, including human-in-the-loop experiences, would be an asset.
• The adaptability. You design for the needs of the people using the product rather than following a single definition of what good UX should look like. You can work with complex, information-dense experiences and balance user needs, accessibility, technical constraints, and the realities of the environment in which the product is used. Experience in healthcare, EMR/EHR products, or another regulated environment is an asset.

Compensation

The salary range for this position is $120-150K.  The salary will be determined based on several factors, including the candidate’s experience, qualifications, skills, and the needs of the organization.
