Data Engineer

About the Role

We are looking for a Data Engineer to build and maintain data pipelines, integrations, reporting datasets, dashboards and visualisations that support internal and client reporting requirements.

This mid-senior role combines hands-on data engineering with business intelligence and report development. You will work closely with the Head of Data Practice and wider technology team to prepare data, develop reliable data models, translate business requirements into reporting solutions, and contribute to the continued evolution of modern data and analytics platforms.

Ideal Profile

Experience & Capabilities

• Hands-on experience across data engineering, data preparation and report development.
• Strong SQL skills, including queries, joins, transformations and views.
• Sound understanding of relational databases, schemas, data flows and data modelling.
• Experience developing dashboards, reports and visualisations using an established BI platform.
• Ability to translate business requirements into data preparation, reporting logic and meaningful metrics.
• Practical troubleshooting experience across data pipelines, reporting and data quality.
• Experience maintaining existing solutions while delivering new requirements.
• Strong ownership and accountability for assigned technical deliverables.

Essential Technical Skills

• SQL and relational database technologies.
• Data modelling and preparation of datasets for reporting and analytics.
• Experience with Power BI, Tableau, QlikView or a comparable BI platform.

Preferred Technical Skills

• Data ingestion pipelines and ETL/ELT processes.
• Python for data processing, transformation and automation.
• Databricks.
• GoodData and MAQL.
• Power BI report maintenance, troubleshooting and enhancement.
• API-based integrations.
• SSRS and legacy report migration.
• Embedded visualisations and iframe concepts.
• Databricks Genie or comparable AI-assisted analytics capabilities.
• Microsoft Azure data environments.

Responsibilities

Data Engineering & Integration

• Work with the Head of Data Practice and stakeholders to understand data sources and define data and reporting requirements.
• Develop and maintain data ingestion pipelines and ETL/ELT processes.
• Build and maintain API-based and other data integrations.
• Write and optimise SQL queries and views for relational data transformation.
• Use Python to process data and automate recurring preparation activities.
• Interpret existing schemas and maintain structured data models.
• Contribute to data processing and transformation within Databricks.
• Validate data completeness, accuracy and consistency from source through to reporting.
• Investigate and resolve pipeline, integration and data quality issues.

Reporting & Business Intelligence

• Develop and maintain reports, dashboards, metrics and visualisations for internal and client users.
• Translate business requirements into effective layouts, visualisations and accurate calculations.
• Maintain and enhance existing Power BI reports, including troubleshooting and reporting logic updates.
• Develop reporting solutions using GoodData and Databricks as adoption increases.
• Migrate and consolidate legacy reporting solutions, including SSRS reports, into newer reporting environments.
• Validate migrated outputs against agreed requirements.
• Support visualisations delivered through client portals and embedded reporting environments.
• Contribute to AI-assisted analytics and natural-language data exploration, including Databricks Genie.

Documentation & Delivery

• Document data flows, transformations, data models and report logic.
• Manage assigned engineering and reporting deliverables from development through to completion.
• Communicate dependencies, progress and issues clearly.
• Collaborate with the wider technology team and stakeholders.
• Adapt delivery priorities as business requirements evolve.
