The learning designer will create effective, engaging, and accessible online and blended learning experiences by assessing learner needs and developing competency-based curricula. They will collaborate with subject matter experts to design, build, and evaluate course content while ensuring technical functionality and platform compliance.
The main objective of the learning designer is to create effective,
engaging and accessible online and blended learning experiences that help
learners acquire specific competencies. The role focuses on assessing learner
needs, designing competency-based curricula and experiences, and developing
content and e-learning material/products in collaboration with subject matter
experts.
Planning and analysis:
Support
the course development coordinator with course scoping and initiation;
collaborate with subject matter experts and project staff to develop course
concept notes.
Lead
training needs analysis; and collaborate with subject matter experts to define
learner profiles, learning gaps and desired competencies.
Define
clear, measurable, and competence-based learning objectives and course
outcomes, applying relevant learning theories to enhance learning.
Analyse
the learning context considering available technology, language, time
constraints and access.
Course design:
Develop
a comprehensive course outline aligning course and module outcomes with
learning activities and assessments. Coordinate consultations with subject
matter experts and integrate their feedback. As needed, design for blending
online and offline activities.
Collaborate
with subject matter experts on content and assets, weighing comprehensiveness,
accuracy, and relevance for learners.
Develop
a course prototype that captures the course's look and feel and the key
interactive elements.
Develop
detailed course scripts (structure, narration, interaction logic, feedback,
interactive activities, assessments to measure competency, and development
instructions).
Facilitate
a collaborative process with subject matter experts and ensure formal approval
of the course design.
Course development:
Build
the course in the selected authoring tools, based on approved course outlines
and scripts. Facilitate a collaborative process with subject matter experts and
ensure formal approval of the alpha and beta versions.
Produce
SCORM-compliant modules, and select and integrate appropriate multimedia and
interactive elements, ensuring technical functionality, accessibility and
platform compliance.
Facilitate
quality control, copy-editing, and, where needed, translation of courses in
different languages, and support course administration on the learning
management system.
Design
course pages and define learner analytics.
Course delivery:
Pilot
test courses with small groups of learners, and update accordingly, where
feasible.
Support
course marketing and outreach.
Provide
learner support and facilitate a supportive learning community.
Evaluation and upgrades:
Design
and facilitate use surveys, interviews and analytics to collect and analyze
learner feedback in evaluation reports.
Oversee
and manage the assessment and manage certification process.
Use
evaluation data and learner feedback to iterate and improve the learning
experience.
