AI Summary

You will manage the end-to-end preparation of client financial work, including bank reconciliations, GST returns, and annual financial statements in Xero. You will work directly with the director to ensure accurate, well-documented drafts and maintain a portfolio of clients against strict deadlines.

About The Back Room

We exist to free our clients' time so they can focus on what they do best — growing their business. We deliver smart, efficient solutions that liberate teams from the everyday admin, and we hold ourselves to the same standard. Time is the ultimate currency, and we treat it like it.

About the Client
Our client is a team of tax professionals and certified accountants based in Auckland, New Zealand, serving individuals and businesses across the country. Their services span bookkeeping and accounting, tax planning and preparation, budgeting and forecasting, business consulting, payroll, and financial reporting. They are looking to build their offshore team to support their accounting and bookkeeping function. This role exists to take client work from raw records through to a review-ready draft, so the director can focus on review, sign-off, and advice.

The Role
As an Accountant / Bookkeeper, you’ll own the preparation of client work end to end, from bank reconciliations and GST through to annual financial statements and income tax returns, all in Xero. You’ll work directly with the director, who reviews and signs off on your work, which means your drafts need to be accurate, well-documented, and traceable to source. Success in the first 6–12 months looks like managing your own client portfolio independently, keeping jobs moving against their due dates, and delivering working papers the director can review with confidence.

What You'll Do

  • Prepare annual financial statements and income tax returns for New Zealand companies, sole traders, partnerships and trusts, ready for director review.

  • Complete bank reconciliations and maintain the general ledger in Xero, coding transactions accurately and separating business from private expenditure.

  • Prepare GST returns for director review and filing.

  • Process payroll, including PAYE, KiwiSaver and leave, and prepare payday filing information.

  • Prepare journals, month-end adjustments, rental schedules, fixed asset registers and depreciation calculations.

  • Build working papers with figures traced to source documents, assumptions stated and open queries listed.

  • Manage a portfolio of clients, track outstanding records and keep jobs moving against their due dates.

  • Draft client correspondence for review, including income confirmations for banks and lenders.

What We're Looking For

  • Minimum two years of accounting and bookkeeping experience, preferably working with New Zealand accounting firms.

  • Strong proficiency in Xero, including bank reconciliations, GST preparation, payroll, journals, financial reporting and general ledger management.

  • Good understanding of New Zealand GST, income tax and accounting requirements.

  • Experience preparing GST returns, annual financial statements and income tax returns for New Zealand businesses.

  • Ability to independently manage bookkeeping and accounting for multiple clients while consistently meeting deadlines.

  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy and problem-solving skills.

  • Good written and spoken English, including professional client email communication.

  • Ability to identify discrepancies, unreconciled transactions and potential accounting or tax issues.

  • Strong time management, organisation and ability to prioritise workloads.

  • Comfortable working independently with minimal supervision and maintaining strict client confidentiality.

  • Willingness to learn new accounting systems, processes and AI-assisted productivity tools.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with MYOB, exposure to myIR, or familiarity with Inland Revenue arrears and instalment arrangements would be an advantage.

Why This Role

You’ll work across whole clients rather than one slice of a process, with direct daily access to the director. As the practice grows, you’ll have real influence over how its systems and processes are built.
