Auto Adjuster / Total Loss Settlement Specialist

Job Summary 

Sedgwick is seeking an experienced Auto Adjuster / Total Loss Settlement Specialist to join our growing team. This role is responsible for investigating and handling auto claims, determining liability, evaluating damages, managing total loss claims, negotiating settlements, and delivering exceptional customer service throughout the claims process. 

The ideal candidate will possess strong claims handling expertise, excellent negotiation skills, and the ability to efficiently manage claims while ensuring fair and accurate settlements in accordance with company standards and client expectations. 

 

Primary Responsibilities 

Claims Management 

  • Investigate and manage personal and commercial auto claims from assignment through resolution. 

  • Complete recorded statements with insureds, claimants, and witnesses as needed. 

  • Obtain and review police reports, accident reports, and supporting documentation. 

  • Determine liability based on facts, evidence, applicable laws, and policy coverage. 

  • Analyze damages, liability, coverage, and claim exposure. 

  • Establish and maintain appropriate claim reserves. 

  • Evaluate claims and negotiate settlements within designated authority levels. 

  • Ensure timely and accurate claim resolution in accordance with client expectations and company standards. 

  • Identify and pursue subrogation opportunities when appropriate. 

  • Communicate with claimants, insureds, attorneys, repair facilities, and other stakeholders throughout the claims process. 

  • Maintain accurate claim documentation and ensure all activities are properly recorded in the claim file. 

Total Loss Settlement Handling 

  • Review vehicle valuations and determine Actual Cash Value (ACV). 

  • Manage total loss claims from assignment through settlement. 

  • Negotiate total loss settlements with claimants and insureds. 

  • Coordinate title processing, salvage disposition, and settlement documentation. 

  • Review valuation reports and supporting documentation to ensure accuracy. 

  • Communicate settlement offers and explain valuation methodology to customers. 

  • Resolve disputed total loss valuations professionally and efficiently. 

Customer and Client Service 

  • Communicate claim status and resolution updates to clients, claimants, repair facilities, and vendors. 

  • Resolve escalated customer concerns in a professional and timely manner. 

  • Maintain strong client relationships through responsiveness and quality service. 

  • Ensure claim files are fully documented and meet quality and compliance standards. 

Operational Excellence 

  • Meet productivity, quality, and cycle time expectations. 

  • Maintain accurate claim documentation and reporting. 

  • Utilize technology and reporting tools to manage workloads effectively. 

  • Support process improvement initiatives and best practices. 

  • Assist with program growth and client service initiatives. 

 

Additional Responsibilities 

  • Perform other duties as assigned.. 

  • Support catastrophe and surge claim operations when needed. 

  • Assist with quality assurance reviews and process improvement initiatives. 

  • Participate in training and mentoring opportunities. 

 

Qualifications 

Education & Licensing 

  • Current adjuster's license or ability to obtain and maintain required state licenses. 

  • Professional industry certifications preferred. 

Experience 

  • Four (4) or more years of auto claims handling, auto adjusting, or related claims management experience preferred. 

  • Experience handling total loss claims and negotiating settlements . 

  • Experience handling standard and non-standard personal and commercial auto claims preferred 

  • Prior insurance carrier, TPA, or independent adjusting experience preferred. 

Knowledge & Skills 

  • Strong understanding of auto claims handling procedures and insurance principles. 

  • Knowledge of liability investigations, coverage analysis, and claims resolution. 

  • Knowledge of total loss valuation methodologies, title processing, and salvage procedures. 

  • Excellent negotiation and settlement skills. 

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. 

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities. 

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. 

  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills. 

  • Strong organizational and time management skills. 

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and claims management platforms. 

  • Ability to create and complete comprehensive, accurate, and professional claim documentation and reports. 

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment. 

 

Preferred Experience 

  • Experience handling insurance claims involving liability investigations and coverage decisions. 

  • Experience managing total loss evaluations and negotiating total loss settlements. 

  • Experience working directly with insurance carriers, TPAs, or independent adjusting firms. 

  • Salvage and recovery experience. 

  • CCC ONE, Mitchell, Audatex, or similar estimating platform experience. 

  • Bodily Injury (BI) claims experience is a plus. 

  • Bilingual skills are a plus but not required. 

  • Professional insurance designations or industry certifications are a plus.
