AI Summary

The Analytics Engineer will own the end-to-end data path from the Snowflake warehouse to Power BI reports used by finance, operations, and sales. This role involves designing star schemas, writing complex SQL and DAX, and partnering with business stakeholders to deliver actionable insights.

Analytics Engineer

Location:  Cranberry Township, PA | Remote Consideration for Exceptional Candidate

Job Type:  Full-Time | Exempt

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States at the time of hire.  This position is not eligible for employer-sponsored work authorization, now or in the future.

The Analytics Engineer will own the path from our Snowflake warehouse to the Power BI reports that finance, operations, sales, customers and carriers use every day. The role reports to the CFO.

Knichel is an intermodal marketing and freight brokerage company. Our data spans shipment and load activity, rail and truckload operations, carrier performance, customer quotes and billing, carrier settlements, and financial accounting. A small team builds and maintains this platform end to end; this position adds capacity and takes ownership of the data warehouse, the reporting models, and a growing portfolio of internal and external reports.

This is a builder's role. This position will write the Snowflake SQL, design the star schema, write the DAX, set up row-level security, and sit with the pricing desk or AR team to make sure the report answers the question they have.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Required Experience and Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in data engineering, analytics engineering or BI development.
  • Strong experience with a cloud data warehouse; Snowflake preferred.
  • Advanced SQL, including window functions, CTEs and query performance tuning.
  • 3+ years developing Power BI reports and semantic models (Desktop and Service).
  • Advanced DAX, including evaluation context, time intelligence and complex calculation logic.
  • Hands-on experience implementing row-level security.
  • Solid understanding of dimensional modeling and data warehousing concepts.
  • Working knowledge of financial data and metrics (revenue, cost, margin, accounts receivable).
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Finance, Statistics or a related field, or equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in transportation, logistics, freight brokerage or intermodal.
  • Experience with ERP/accounting systems (Sage Intacct a plus).
  • Experience with Power Query, Power Automate and Dataverse.
  • Experience distributing Power BI content to external users (guest access, embedded analytics, subscriptions).
  • Experience with geospatial analysis and mapping visuals.
  • Experience with dbt or similar transformation tools, and Git-based version control.
  • Microsoft PL-300 or SnowPro Core certification.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Data Engineering (Snowflake)

  • Design, build and maintain data pipelines and transformation layers in a cloud data warehouse (Snowflake), following a layered (raw / curated / presentation) architecture.
  • Integrate data from operational systems (TMS), accounting/ERP, and third-party sources using managed ingestion tools.
  • Develop dimensional models (star schemas, fact and dimension tables) at the appropriate grain for each business process.
  • Centralize business rules and KPI definitions in the warehouse so every report uses a single, consistent definition.
  • Write efficient, maintainable SQL; apply best practices for deduplication, join logic, null handling and performance.
  • Support geospatial and distance-based analysis for lane, network and route optimization use cases.

Power BI Development

  • Build and maintain Power BI semantic models, including relationships, date tables and centralized measure libraries.
  • Develop advanced DAX calculations: time intelligence, period-over-period comparisons, what-if scenarios, segmentation and ranking.
  • Design and implement row-level security for internal role-based access and for external customer and partner reporting.
  • Manage the Power BI Service: workspaces, apps, scheduled and incremental refresh, deployment and report distribution.
  • Deliver clear, executive-ready dashboards with strong visual hierarchy, consistent design standards and drill-through to detail.

Analysis and Business Partnering

  • Partner with Finance on cash flow forecasting, accounts receivable, working capital and P&L reporting.
  • Partner with Pricing on margin analysis, quote-to-actual variance and lane profitability.
  • Partner with Operations and Sales on service performance, carrier and customer scorecards, and sales performance reporting.
  • Translate analysis into concise, actionable recommendations for leadership.

Automation and Data Quality

  • Build and maintain workflow automations and data integrations using the Microsoft Power Platform.
  • Reconcile reporting to source systems and the general ledger; establish data quality checks and monitoring.
  • Document data models, metric definitions and processes to support maintainability and knowledge sharing.

TYPICAL PROJECTS

  • Financial forecasting and working capital dashboards for executive leadership.
  • Customer- and carrier-facing performance scorecards with secure external access.
  • Lane, service and operational performance reporting.
  • Pricing, margin variance and profitability analytics.
  • Network optimization analysis (e.g., equipment reuse and route efficiency).
  • Incentive compensation and sales performance models.
  • Financial reporting and reconciliation from the accounting system.
