About the Job
As a Staff Software Engineer on Keeper’s Rapid Innovation team, you will serve as a hands-on technical leader responsible for turning high-priority ideas into working software. Projects may begin with limited requirements and span backend services, web applications, desktop software, security products, developer tooling, AI-enabled capabilities or entirely new product concepts. You will independently shape technical approaches, make architecture decisions, build prototypes and determine what is required to validate an idea. When a concept proves successful, you will help transition it to an established or newly formed product engineering team and move on to the next initiative.
This role is designed for an engineer who thrives in ambiguity, enjoys learning unfamiliar systems quickly and is energized by building across multiple areas of software engineering rather than owning a single product or technology stack long term.
Responsibilities
- Rapidly design and build working software for new product concepts, technical experiments and strategic initiatives
- Take loosely defined ideas from concept through functional implementation with minimal product or technical specification
- Define architecture and technical direction for early-stage projects while making pragmatic tradeoffs around speed, security and scalability
- Work across backend, frontend, desktop, platform, integration and infrastructure technologies depending on project needs
- Develop backend services and APIs using Java and other appropriate technologies
- Build modern user experiences using JavaScript, TypeScript, React and related technologies
- Evaluate unfamiliar technologies, frameworks, APIs and codebases and become productive quickly
- Integrate AI models, APIs and emerging AI capabilities into software when appropriate, partnering with Keeper’s AI and Machine Learning teams for specialized expertise
- Identify technical risks, validate feasibility and determine whether concepts are ready to move toward productization
- Create enough technical structure, documentation and architecture guidance to support clean handoff to long-term engineering owners
- Mentor engineers and raise technical standards through design reviews, technical guidance and hands-on collaboration
- Collaborate directly with the CTO, Engineering leaders, Product teams and subject-matter experts across Keeper
- Use AI-assisted development tools such as Claude, ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot or similar platforms extensively to accelerate research, coding, debugging, testing and technical exploration
Requirements
- 9+ years of professional software engineering experience with demonstrated breadth across multiple areas of software development
- Strong software engineering fundamentals and the ability to design and build complete applications, services and integrations
- Demonstrated experience leading technical architecture and execution for complex software projects
- Proven ability to independently take ambiguous or minimally defined ideas from concept through functional implementation
- Strong backend development experience, preferably with Java and modern service-oriented architectures
- Experience building modern frontend applications using JavaScript or TypeScript and React or similar frameworks
- Experience designing and integrating APIs, backend services, databases and third-party technologies
- Strong debugging and problem-solving skills across unfamiliar systems and codebases
- Demonstrated ability to learn new programming languages, frameworks and technical domains quickly
- Ability to make effective technical tradeoffs when speed and experimentation are more important than long-term production architecture
- Strong technical curiosity and a demonstrated history of experimenting with, building or exploring new technologies
- Proven ability to influence technical direction and mentor engineers without relying on formal people-management authority
- Experience using AI-assisted development tools to accelerate software engineering, research, debugging and prototyping
- Ability to clearly communicate technical findings, architecture decisions and handoff requirements to other engineering teams
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience participating in hackathons, engineering competitions, open-source projects, technical side projects or similar build-focused environments
- Experience working at an early-stage startup, innovation lab, prototyping team or other environment with limited structure and rapidly changing priorities
- Experience with Python and/or Rust
- Experience integrating large language models, AI APIs, agents or AI-enabled workflows into software
- Experience building cybersecurity, developer tooling, desktop, infrastructure or platform products
- Experience taking a product from initial concept or prototype through technical validation and handoff
- Broad technical experience spanning multiple languages, frameworks, platforms or areas of software engineering
Benefits
- Medical, Dental & Vision (inclusive of domestic partnerships)
- Employer Paid Life Insurance & Employee/Spouse/Child Supplemental Life
- Voluntary Short/Long Term Disability Insurance
- 401K (Roth/Traditional)
- A generous PTO plan that celebrates your commitment and seniority (including paid Bereavement/Jury Duty, etc.)
- Above-market annual bonuses
