Staff Accountant
Department: Finance & Accounting
Reports to: Accounting Manager / Controller
Location: Remote (U.S.)
Employment type: Full-time
Experience level: 2–5 years
Allwater is looking for a detail-driven Staff Accountant to serve as a core member of our Finance & Accounting team. In this role you will own key pieces of the month-end close, apply revenue recognition standards accurately, and provide hands-on support to our Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable functions. Just as important, you will partner with teams across the company—operations, sales, and beyond—to make sure the financials tell a clear, timely, and reliable story.
We view accounting as a forward-looking function, not a rear-view mirror. As Allwater continues to invest in automation and artificial intelligence, this role will help shape how we adopt those tools—streamlining routine work, improving accuracy, and freeing the team to focus on analysis and judgment. We are looking for someone who is curious about technology and excited to grow with a modern finance organization.
Month-End Close & General Accounting
• Own and execute assigned components of the monthly, quarterly, and annual close, including journal entries, accruals, prepaids, and account reconciliations.
• Prepare and maintain balance sheet reconciliations, investigating and resolving discrepancies on a timely basis.
• Support the preparation of financial statements and internal management reporting, ensuring accuracy and adherence to deadlines.
• Help maintain and improve the close calendar, documentation, and standard operating procedures.
Revenue Recognition
• Apply revenue recognition policies (ASC 606) accurately across the company's products and services, including contract review and proper timing of revenue.
• Reconcile deferred and recognized revenue, prepare supporting schedules, and ensure revenue is recorded completely and correctly.
• Partner with sales, operations, and billing teams to ensure contracts and transactions are set up and recorded appropriately.
Accounts Payable & Accounts Receivable Support
• Provide direct, hands-on support to the AP function—reviewing and processing invoices, verifying coding and approvals, and helping ensure timely, accurate vendor payments.
• Provide direct support to the AR function—assisting with billing, cash application, collections follow-up, and customer account reconciliation.
• Serve as a knowledgeable backup and cross-functional resource for AP/AR during high-volume periods, absences, and process changes.
Cross-Department Partnership
• Work collaboratively with departments across Allwater, answering accounting questions and supporting them with reporting, budgeting inputs, and ad hoc analysis as needed.
• Act as a reliable point of contact who translates accounting requirements into practical guidance for non-finance colleagues.
Project Tracking & Analysis
• Track project costs, budgets, and progress, ensuring expenses and revenue are recorded to the correct projects and reporting on variances.
• Support project profitability analysis and provide clear, well-organized data to project owners and leadership.
Innovation & Continuous Improvement (AI)
• Contribute to Allwater's adoption of automation and AI within accounting—identifying repetitive tasks that can be streamlined and helping pilot and refine new tools.
• Champion process improvements that increase accuracy, shorten the close, and strengthen internal controls.
General
• Assist with audits, tax preparation support, and other requests by preparing schedules and documentation.
• Ensure compliance with GAAP, company policies, and internal controls in all areas of responsibility.
• Perform other duties typical of a Staff Accountant as assigned.
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
• 2–5 years of progressive accounting experience, including month-end close and reconciliations.
• Working knowledge of GAAP and revenue recognition principles (ASC 606); direct rev rec experience strongly preferred.
• Hands-on experience with AP and/or AR processes.
• Proficiency with accounting/ERP systems and strong Excel skills; experience with project or job-cost tracking is a plus.
• Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple deadlines.
• Excellent communication skills and a collaborative approach to working across departments.
• Curiosity about and comfort with technology, automation, and AI tools in a finance setting.
Preferred
• CMA or CMA candidate.
• Experience in a company with recurring/contract-based revenue or project-based work.
• Experience supporting or implementing automation in an accounting environment.
• Competitive salary commensurate with experience.
• Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance.
• 401(k) retirement plan with company match.
• Paid time off, paid holidays, and paid sick leave.
• Fully remote work with flexibility and a supportive, collaborative team.
• Professional development support, including CMA and continuing-education assistance.
• The opportunity to help build a modern, technology-forward finance function.
