Software Development Engineer - .Net/C#

Avalara is accelerating the delivery of AI-enabled capabilities across our compliance platform to improve customer experience, increase engineering velocity, and scale global operations efficiently. As transaction volumes, product complexity, and AI-driven initiatives expand, we require engineers who can deliver high-quality software consistently and grow their scope of impact over time.

Engineers in this role will be embedded in the Brazil Returns engineering team, working directly on the Tax Compliance platform, a high-criticality, cloud-based solution that automates the generation and submission of Brazilian fiscal obligations on behalf of hundreds of Brazilian entities. The platform integrates with multiple ERP systems, consolidates fiscal, accounting, and transactional data, applies complex regulatory business rules, and assembles validated electronic files for submission to Brazilian tax authorities within strict fiscal calendar deadlines.

• Deliver scalable, secure, and high-performing backend and frontend systems that support Avalara's global compliance platform.

• Improve code quality and automated test coverage through CI/CD and engineering best practices.

• Reduce production incidents by writing observable, well-structured code and participating in proactive monitoring.

• Elevate engineering standards, improving every codebase, pipeline, and architecture artifact, through rigorous testing, clean code, and comprehensive documentation.

• Strong English communication skills (written and spoken) for global collaboration.

• B.S. in Computer Science or Engineering.

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience.

• Solid hands-on experience with .NET (C#) building scalable APIs and services.

• Experience with React (TypeScript) building maintainable frontend applications.

• Experience with distributed systems and RESTful and/or GraphQL APIs.

• Experience with AWS cloud environments.

• Experience with CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitLab).

• Experience with Docker and Kubernetes.

• Experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases.

• Good knowledge of automated testing strategies.

• Demonstrated hands-on experience applying AI tools to improve software engineering workflows and measurable delivery outcomes.

Nice to have:

• Experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform).

• Experience in SaaS or enterprise-scale platforms.

• Experience in compliance, financial systems, or regulated domains.

• Experience collaborating across geographically distributed teams.
