What You’ll Be Doing

The Sr. Manager of Product Development is a hands-on technical product development role responsible for advancing assigned formulation, sample development, ingredient feasibility, technical troubleshooting, and commercialization-readiness work, with a primary focus on active Product Development projects including renovation, reformulation, line extension, product optimization, and commercialization support.

This role adds senior-level formulation and technical product development capacity to the Product and Education Team by executing assigned technical work through the Product Development intake, prioritization, dashboard, and weekly visibility process. It is designed to move priority Product Development projects forward with speed, accuracy, scientific integrity, and strong cross-functional follow-through, while operating within established Product Development strategy, priorities, and team ownership.

The role partners closely with the Sr. Manager of Product Development on active product development execution, renovation, reformulation, product optimization, sample reviews, formula revisions, technical troubleshooting, commercialization readiness, and cross-functional execution. It also supports the Sr. Manager, R&D and Innovation Research by helping translate science-backed innovation, ingredient rationale, technical R&D, and complex formulation needs into feasible formulas, samples, development plans, and commercialization support.

It is expected to own assigned deliverables, keep project status clear, provide timely technical updates, maintain strong documentation, escalate risks or decisions as needed, and ensure assigned projects continue moving forward.

Key Responsibilities

Product Development & Formulation Execution

  • Execute or support assigned product development and formulation projects based on business priority, technical complexity, team capacity, and required expertise.

  • Develop, refine, and troubleshoot formulas across innovation, renovation, reformulation, line extension, and product optimization projects.

  • Translate product concepts, scientific rationale, consumer needs, and brand standards into technically feasible product development pathways.

  • Support formula development across supplement formats, including powders, capsules, tablets, gummies, stick packs, gels/liquids, functional beverages, and emerging formats as needed.

  • Evaluate formulas for ingredient functionality, dosage strategy, taste, texture, stability, sensory experience, manufacturing feasibility, regulatory considerations, cost, and consumer expectations.

  • Partner with suppliers, flavor houses, co-manufacturers, and internal teams to develop samples, evaluate prototypes, refine formulas, and resolve technical issues.

  • Support formula revisions, ingredient substitutions, flavor optimization, sensory troubleshooting, and production-readiness needs.

  • Balance technical rigor, product quality, consumer experience, cost, manufacturability, and speed-to-market.

Assigned Project Execution & Dashboard Follow-Through

  • Execute assigned Product Development and formulation work through the team’s established intake, prioritization, and project visibility processes, ensuring timely updates and strong follow-through.

  • Partner with Product Development teammates and cross-functional stakeholders to align assigned work with Product Development priorities, commercialization timelines, documentation needs, and cross-functional expectations.

  • Provide clear, timely updates on assigned work, risks, decisions needed, and upcoming milestones.

  • Escalate technical risks, timeline issues, resource needs, unresolved decisions, or cross-functional blockers to the appropriate teammate and/or leadership.

Renovation, Reformulation & Product Optimization

  • Identify opportunities to improve taste, texture, solubility, sensory experience, ingredient quality, cost, sourcing, manufacturing feasibility, and product performance.

  • Partner with the Sr. Manager of Product Development on execution-heavy renovation and reformulation projects, providing formulation and technical product development support as needed.

  • Help ensure updated products maintain scientific integrity, brand standards, regulatory alignment, quality expectations, operational feasibility, and consumer value.

Commercialization & Cross-Functional Execution

  • Support assigned projects from concept refinement through formulation, sampling, documentation, packaging, commercialization readiness, and handoff to Supply Chain.

  • Partner with Product Development teammates to ensure assigned projects have clear product requirements, technical inputs, formula documentation, sample feedback, decision points, risks, and launch-readiness criteria.

  • Support cross-functional alignment across formula, label, claims, documentation, costing, packaging, manufacturing feasibility, and production-readiness requirements.

  • Participate in sample reviews, flavor panels, technical evaluations, formula revisions, and commercialization discussions.

  • Help resolve technical commercialization issues related to formulation, raw materials, sensory performance, manufacturing constraints, cost, or supplier execution.

Supplier, Co-Manufacturer & Technical Partner Management

  • Support raw material substitutions and alternate sourcing evaluations when business continuity, cost, formulation, or product performance needs arise.

  • Collaborate with Quality, Regulatory, Supply Chain, Product Documentation, and Product Development teammates to ensure ingredient and supplier decisions are aligned with product needs and business priorities.

Documentation & Technical Inputs

  • Maintain clear, accurate, and organized technical documentation for assigned product development and formulation work, including formula revisions, sample feedback, technical decisions, and key project rationale.

  • Provide complete and timely technical inputs for formula documentation, ingredient rationale, raw material decisions, supplier inputs, claims support, label review, commercialization handoffs, and change-control needs.

  • Partner with the Product Development teammates and appropriate cross-functional process owners to support SFP creation, raw material review and approval workflows, CVC claims, bill of materials, finished good specifications, and related documentation requirements.

  • Ensure technical documentation and key decisions are traceable, consistent, and accessible to the team.

Innovation & R&D Support

  • Provide technical formulation and Product Development support for selected innovation and R&D initiatives as team priorities require.

  • Translate scientific concepts, novel ingredients, and technical hypotheses into feasible formulas, samples, development plans, and commercialization pathways.

  • Evaluate formulation feasibility, ingredient compatibility, dosing approach, sensory implications, manufacturing constraints, and commercialization risks.

  • Provide hands-on technical support for complex formulation work, ingredient substitutions, sensory issues, raw material challenges, and product performance concerns.

Product Education & Technical Storytelling Support

  • Provide formulation, ingredient, and technical product development inputs to support Education, Brand, Sales, Marketing, and Product teams.

  • Translate technical information into clear internal-facing explanations that support product understanding, launch education, sales training, and product storytelling.

  • Serve as an SME during internal- and external-facing presentations to explain ingredient selection, formula design, product format, flavor strategy, product differentiation, and the technical “why” behind product decisions.

  • Partner with Product and Education teammates to ensure technical inputs are accurate, useful, and aligned with approved positioning and claims direction.

What We’re Looking For

  • 7+ years of experience in product development, formulation, R&D, food science, dietary supplements, nutrition, wellness, CPG, or a related field.

  • Hands-on formulation experience strongly preferred in dietary supplements, functional foods, powders, capsules, tablets, gummies, stick packs, gels/liquids, beverages, or other regulated consumer product formats.

  • Demonstrated ability to move products from concept through formulation, sampling, refinement, troubleshooting, and commercialization support.

  • Strong understanding of ingredient functionality, dosage strategy, flavor, texture, sensory evaluation, cost, manufacturing constraints, regulatory considerations, and launch readiness.

  • Experience working with suppliers, flavor houses, co-manufacturers, Quality, Regulatory, Supply Chain, Product Documentation, Marketing, Sales, and Education teams.

  • Strong ability to execute active Product Development work, with the technical range to support early-stage innovation when needed.

  • Strong technical problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot formulation, raw material, sensory, supplier, and commercialization issues.

  • Ability to manage multiple assigned projects, communicate status clearly, and follow through on deliverables with ownership and urgency.

  • Strong documentation habits and ability to provide accurate technical inputs for formula records, ingredient rationale, sample feedback, claims support, label review, and commercialization handoffs.

  • Ability to translate technical and scientific information into clear, commercially useful language.

  • Strong communication and a team-first mindset, with the flexibility and willingness to step in where needed to support cross-functional requests, shifting priorities, and broader Product Development team needs.

  • Experience with systems such as SpecRight, TraceGains, Unifize, Asana, Smartsheet, or similar platforms preferred.

  • Approximately 10–15% travel, including visits to contract manufacturers, suppliers, industry events, and company meetings.
