Job Description

J.S. Held is seeking an experienced and highly motivated (Senior) Environmental Scientist / (Senior) Industrial Hygienist to join our Industrial Hygiene & Built Environment practice in Los Angeles. This role is ideal for a seasoned professional with a strong background in environmental consulting, hazardous materials assessment, regulatory compliance, and client advisory services.

The successful candidate will lead and manage complex environmental investigations, provide technical expertise on hazardous materials and indoor environmental quality issues, and support project delivery for a diverse portfolio of commercial, industrial, institutional, healthcare, and insurance-related clients. In addition to conducting field assessments, this individual will play a key role in client engagement, project oversight, staff mentoring, and technical leadership.

Job Responsibilities

  • Lead and perform complex environmental investigations, inspections, and monitoring programs related to asbestos, lead-based paint, mold, and other environmental hazards.
  • Serve as a technical resource and subject matter expert for hazardous materials assessments, indoor air quality (IAQ) evaluations, and remediation projects.
  • Manage field activities, including air, bulk, and surface sampling programs, ensuring compliance with project objectives and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee and interpret environmental data, prepare technical reports, and provide clear recommendations to clients and project stakeholders.
  • Direct remediation and abatement oversight activities, including contractor monitoring, final visual inspections, and clearance air sampling.
  • Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including OSHA, EPA, and CDPH requirements, while ensuring adherence to company health and safety standards.
  • Manage project schedules, budgets, and deliverables, ensuring high-quality execution and client satisfaction.
  • Develop and maintain strong client relationships by providing technical guidance, regulatory interpretation, and strategic consulting support.
  • Mentor and support junior staff through field training, technical review, and professional development initiatives.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across J.S. Held to support complex projects, business development activities, and practice growth initiatives.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of technical procedures, quality assurance programs, and best practices within the Industrial Hygiene & Built Environment practice.
  • Maintain and calibrate field equipment and ensure proper implementation of quality control and quality assurance procedures.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health, Environmental Engineering, Kinesiology, or a related discipline.
  • 5+ years of experience in industrial hygiene, environmental consulting, hazardous materials management, or a related field, with demonstrated progression in responsibility.
  • Extensive experience conducting and managing asbestos, lead-based paint, mold, and indoor air quality investigations.
  • Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations, including OSHA, EPA, CDPH, and applicable hazardous materials regulations.
  • Experience overseeing environmental sampling programs, including air, bulk, and surface sampling, and interpreting laboratory data.
  • Demonstrated experience managing projects, coordinating field teams, and delivering high-quality client deliverables on schedule and within budget.
  • Strong technical writing, report preparation, and quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) review experience.
  • Ability to independently lead field investigations and travel to project sites throughout the Los Angeles area and surrounding regions.
  • Experience serving as a client-facing consultant and providing technical recommendations to stakeholders.
  • Valid Driver's License.

Preferred

  • Certified Site Surveillance Technician (CSST).
  • California Lead Sampling Technician Certification.
  • NIOSH 582 Microscopy Course (or equivalent).
  • OSHA 40-Hour HAZWOPER Certification.
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or progress toward professional certification.
  • EPA AHERA Inspector and/or Management Planner accreditation.
  • Experience mentoring junior staff and providing technical oversight.
  • Experience supporting business development initiatives, proposal preparation, and client relationship management.
  • Experience working on complex commercial, industrial, healthcare, education, or insurance-related projects.

A reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role is $110,000 - $165,000. Any offered salary range is based on a wide array of factors including but not limited to skillset, experience, training, location, scope of role, management responsibility, etc.
