About MellowSleep

MellowSleep is fast-growing home goods brand building premium products for modern homes. We sell across a true omnichannel footprint — our own Shopify DTC storefront, Amazon, and TikTok Shop — and we're expanding our wholesale presence into major national big-box retailers while scaling internationally.

Selling physical product across marketplaces, direct, and brick-and-mortar retail — and across multiple US states — makes our accounting operation more involved than most companies our size. This role exists to keep the books accurate and the close on time, and to make sure our sales tax obligations are handled cleanly as we grow.

The Role

We're hiring a Senior Accountant to oversee day-to-day accounting and take ownership of an accurate, timely monthly close, working alongside our existing bookkeepers. On top of that, you'll own our sales tax compliance and bring enough partnership income tax experience to support our filings and work well with our external tax firm.

This is a hands-on oversight role, not a pure preparer or a pure reviewer: our bookkeepers handle the day-to-day transactional work, and you make sure it all ties out, closes on time, and holds up to scrutiny. You'll partner closely with the Head of Finance and our outsourced CFO.

The role also carries some FP&A: you'll help with forecasting and the forward-looking numbers that guide planning, working closely with the Head of Finance.

What You'll Do

Accounting Oversight & Monthly Close

  • Help build out the accounting function for the business — establishing the processes, controls, close calendar, and structure a growing company needs, and shaping how the accounting unit scales over time.
  • Own the monthly close end to end — set and hold the close calendar and deliver accurate results on time.
  • Oversee and review the work of our bookkeepers: review journal entries, reconciliations, and accruals, and resolve the questions they escalate.
  • Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable — oversee vendor payments and customer collections, keep aging under control, and ensure AP/AR reconcile cleanly to the general ledger.
  • Maintain data integrity between our operating platforms (Shopify, Amazon, TikTok Shop, retail portals) and the general ledger.
  • Inventory accounting— develop a bottom-up build across many SKUs (landed cost, cost layers, inventory roll-forward) in an environment with limited ERP/system support, where you build and maintain the process yourself rather than relying on out-of-the-box software.
  • Own the chart of accounts and accounting policies and keep documentation clean and consistent.
  • Prepare financial statements and supporting schedules and support audit/review readiness.

Tax

  • Own US multi-state sales tax compliance end to end: monitor economic nexus, manage registrations, and ensure accurate, timely filings across every state where we have exposure.
  • Reconcile marketplace facilitator tax — the sales tax collected and remitted on our behalf by Amazon, TikTok Shop, and other channels — against our own records, and handle notices and discrepancies.
  • Manage sales tax automation tooling and coordinate with advisors where needed.
  • Manage indirect tax compliance as we expand internationally — Canadian GST/HST and European (EU) VAT — including registrations, filings, and reconciliations, coordinating with local advisors in each jurisdiction.
  • Support our partnership income tax process as a multi-member LLC: coordinate with our external tax firm on K-1s and other applicable form filings, and prepare the supporting schedules and partner capital account data they need.
  • Help keep partner-level tax reporting accurate, timely, and audit-ready.

FP&A & Cash Flow

  • Support FP&A and forecasting — help build and maintain budgets and rolling forecasts, and explain variances against actuals as each month closes.
  • Own daily and weekly cash flow reporting — track the cash position and near-term inflows and outflows so leadership always has a current view of liquidity.

Requirements

What You Bring

  • 5+ years of accounting experience, including hands-on ownership of a monthly close and comfort overseeing or reviewing others' work (bookkeepers or junior staff).
  • Solid US GAAP foundation and strong month-end close discipline.
  • US multi-state sales tax compliance experience — nexus, registrations, filings, and marketplace facilitator reconciliation.
  • Hands-on experience managing accounts payable and accounts receivable, including collections and aging management.
  • Some US partnership income tax experience — you don't need to be a specialist, but you should be comfortable with K-1s and other applicable form filings and supporting the process alongside an external tax firm.
  • Hands-on experience with QuickBooks (Online preferred).
  • Comfort working with e-commerce/marketplace data (Shopify, Amazon, TikTok Shop) and reconciling platform and settlement data to the books.
  • AI fluency — you actively use AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, or similar) in day-to-day accounting work: researching questions, drafting reconciliations and memos, cleaning data, and speeding up recurring close and compliance tasks. You treat AI as a force multiplier, with the judgment to verify its output before it drives a filing or a decision.
  • Strong written communication — you can explain an accounting or tax issue clearly to a non-accountant.

Preferred / Nice to Have

  • CPA or equivalent certification
  • Consumer products, home goods, or e-commerce/retail industry experience, including big-box wholesale.
  • Familiarity with sales tax automation (e.g., Avalara, TaxJar).
  • Experience overseeing a bookkeeping function or outsourced accounting partners.
  • BI and data tooling (Power BI, SQL, advanced Excel) for reconciliation and analysis.
  • Exposure to international indirect tax (VAT/GST) and multi-currency, given our expansion.
  • Working knowledge of building forecasts and budgets.
  • Comfort in a lean, fast-moving environment where you build the process as you go.

Benefits

Why This Role

You'll own the accounting operation of a growing omnichannel consumer brand — the close, the books, and the sales tax that keeps us compliant in every state we sell in. You'll have a direct line to finance leadership and real ownership over how cleanly this company runs its financials as it scales into new states and countries. If you want to run the books rather than just keep them, this is that role.
