The Project Delivery Lead provides oversight and coaching to project managers to ensure safe, profitable, and high-quality delivery of environmental consulting projects. This role focuses on portfolio performance, risk management, and the development of commercial and financial capabilities within a matrix organization.

About Us

At Onterris, we build careers grounded in purpose, responsibility and real-world impact.

“For Planet and Progress” is our north star that guides everything we do. We believe environmental responsibility and human progress are interconnected, interwoven and international. Our scientists, engineers, field teams, consultants and professionals collaborate across disciplines and geographies, guiding industries and governments, ensuring that communities and environments thrive.

When you join us, you’re not just forging a career, you’re joining a movement. A movement for better thinking, smarter solutions and lasting impact.

Together, we will advance our way of life and protect the integrity of our environment every step of the way.

A Day in the Life

As a Project Delivery Lead, you will help project managers deliver safe, profitable, high-quality environmental consulting projects while strengthening financial performance across an assigned portfolio. You will combine proactive oversight with practical coaching, helping project managers identify risks early, navigate challenges, and build their commercial and financial capabilities.

Reporting to the Vice President of Project Delivery Excellence for Environmental Consulting with a dotted line to the VP Ops Leader, you will partner with regional, operations, program, finance, and project controls leaders. This is a matrix leadership role: project managers retain their existing reporting relationships, while you provide delivery oversight, guidance, and mentoring. The focus is portfolio performance and project manager development, not performing technical project work. This role may be performed remotely within the United States.

The compensation range for this role is $125,000 to $175,000, in addition to an annual bonus (12%), commensurate with experience, skills, and geographic location.

To thrive in this role, you’ll be comfortable taking ownership of the following responsibilities:

Portfolio Oversight and Performance

  • Oversee safe, efficient project delivery against scope, schedule, quality, risk, and financial commitments, with the goal of achieving or improving the financial performance established when projects are sold.
  • Lead regular portfolio reviews, typically monthly with each assigned project manager, to assess project health, identify emerging risks, and agree on corrective actions and follow-through.
  • Analyze project costs, billings, schedules, estimates at completion, and forecasts. Address root causes of performance issues to reduce write-offs, protect margins, and improve cash flow.
  • Partner with project managers and finance teams on timely invoicing, unbilled balances, accounts receivable, and collection strategies to improve Days Sales Outstanding (DSO).
  • In coordination with the Operations or Program Manager, providing guidance in assigning projects and pursuit efforts to project managers.

Commercial Discipline and Risk Management

  • Review all client-facing cost estimates and proposal pricing within the assigned portfolio before submission. Check pricing guidance, applicable rate schedules, resource plans, and allowances for safety, quality reviews, project oversight, and other delivery requirements.
  • Understand applicable client contracts and help project managers translate commercial terms into delivery plans, budgets, and risk controls. Identify commercial risks and route exceptions through the appropriate approval process.
  • Support proactive scope and change management, including change orders, budget and schedule adjustments, stakeholder communication, and dispute resolution.
  • Help teams budget appropriate project review and oversight effort and recover that effort where permitted by the contract.

Coaching and Consistent Delivery

  • Serve as a practical resource for project managers facing client communication, team coordination, financial, or delivery challenges. Coach project managers and emerging project managers to strengthen judgment, accountability, and confidence.
  • Partner with operations and program leaders on project and pursuit assignments, project manager development, and performance feedback without replacing existing line-management responsibilities.
  • Work with project controls leadership and Project Support Specialists to establish effective scheduling, progress tracking, reporting, and financial monitoring, including earned value methods where appropriate.
  • Promote consistent project kickoffs, milestone reviews, and closeout practices. Share lessons learned and help teams adopt project management tools, processes, and improvements.

Your Expertise and Skills

These requirements reflect the knowledge, skills and abilities that help you do your best work here.

Core Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in engineering, environmental sciences, finance, accounting, business, or a related technical or business discipline.
  • Relevant experience in project management, project controls, project finance, or consulting operations, with demonstrated ability to assess project performance and guide project managers.
  • 8+ years is preferred; candidates with fewer years and strong, directly relevant skills and results will also be considered.
  • Strong financial and commercial judgment, including the ability to interpret project budgets, costs, forecasts, margins, billing, and contract requirements and turn findings into practical actions.
  • Clear written and verbal communication, confident presentation skills, and the ability to build relationships, coach colleagues, and influence outcomes within a matrix organization.
  • Strong organization, problem-solving, and prioritization skills, including the ability to work independently and make sound decisions with incomplete information.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting environmental consulting projects from pursuit through closeout, whether through project delivery, finance, project controls, or operations.
  • Familiarity with fixed-price, fixed-unit-rate, time-and-materials, and other contract models, along with scheduling concepts, earned value management, and risk and contingency management.
  • Experience with proposal development, pricing, financial systems, process improvement, and coaching teams through change. Familiarity with Onterris systems and processes is an advantage.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
