Packaging Engineer-Costa Rica (REMOTE)

Position Summary 

The Packaging Engineer Role is dedicated to the design, development, and lifecycle management of flexible sterile barrier systems. This role combines hands-on laboratory expertise with direct customer engagement to support product design and development, defect investigations, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement initiativesThe position serves as a key technical interface between customers, Sales, Quality, Operations, R&D, and global Oliver sites. 

 

Primary Responsibilities 

Commercial Support 

  • Provide material selection guidance and product recommendations aligned with customer design requirements. 

  • Support packaging design consultation and develop packaging design concepts and prototypes for CleanCut Card, Pouch and Tray based packaging systems.  

  • Lead defect analysis investigations and provide corrective action recommendations. 

  • Deliver regulatory education and consultation related to ISO 11607 and sterile barrier systems. 

  • Develop and deliver technical training materials to support customer engagement and understanding. 

  • Utilize CRM systems to track and manage customer technical requests and project activity. 

  • Partner with Marketing on technically driven initiatives to support growth  

  • Contribute to the development and refinement of technical marketing materials (e.g., product data sheets, comparison tools, and reference guides). 

 

 

 

 

Laboratory Operations & Technical Testing 

  • Operate and manage a packaging test laboratory within the Costa Rica Technical Center. 

  • Perform packaging testing, material characterization, and analytical testing to support customers in the region.  Includes sterile barrier systems and materials, protective packaging, packaging systems and ink systems for printed content. 

  • Develop, maintain, and execute laboratory procedures in alignment with ISO, ASTM, and industry standards. 

  • Design and implement custom test methods when required. 

  • Maintain laboratory equipment, calibration schedules, and workspace organization. 

  • Utilize and improve lab management software platforms to prioritize, schedule, and track lab activities. 

 

Technical Investigation & Continuous Improvement 

  • Lead data analysis and technical investigations related to product performance. 

  • Analyze trends in product performance and field data. 

  • Identify opportunities for process optimization and capability enhancement. 

  • Support specification development and change management initiatives. 

 

 

Operations, Quality Assurance and Supply Chain support 

  • Provide technical support for customer complaints and CAPA investigations across multiple production sites.  

  • Analyze test data and field performance trends to identify opportunities for product design improvements. 

  • Collaborate with Process Engineering and Quality Assurance teams to support product evaluations and validations. 

  • Partner with the Product Specifications Team to develop and maintain specifications that align with internal standards and customer expectations. 

  • Support supplier qualification, change control, and supplier CAPA processes, including technical evaluations and written summaries for customer communication. 

 

Safety 

  • Work with the EHS Department to ensure that test lab facility, equipment and procedures comply with Oliver’s standard regulatory requirements. 

  • Ensure that all potentially hazardous materials in lab and testing areas are properly stored and labeled.  

  • Ensure all new materials and testing procedures are evaluated for potential safety risks.

Preferred Qualifications 

Education and/or Experience:  

  • Degree in Packaging Engineering, Engineering, Chemistry, or related field. 

  • 3+ years of relevant experience in packaging engineering or similar discipline. 

  • Strong understanding of sterile barrier systems and flexible packaging design. 

  • Working knowledge of ISO 11607, ISO 13485, and applicable ASTM standards. 

  • Familiarity with flexible packaging converting and sealing equipment. 

  • Experience applying quality and statistical tools such as DFMEA, DOE, Gauge R&R, SPC, and Process Capability. 

  • Skilled using statistical and analysis tools such as Excel and MiniTab.  

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving ability with demonstrated data interpretation skills. 

  • Ability to read and interpret technical standards, scientific documentation, and regulatory requirements. 

 

Interpersonal Skills:  

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. 

  • Fluency in English and Spanish. 

  • Ability to present technical information clearly to internal and external stakeholders. 

  • Effective collaboration with international Oliver technical services teams to troubleshoot issues and support global customers. 

 

Other Skills 

  • Self-motivated and capable of working independently. 

  • Organized and detail-oriented with strong project ownership.

Working Conditions 

This position operates in laboratory, manufacturing and professional office environments. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones and photocopiers. This role also uses laboratory equipment.
