Role: Head of Talent & Careers

About the role
We are looking for a Head of Talent & Careers to lead the continued development of BSI’s enterprise talent and careers strategy.
This role will shape how colleagues understand and take ownership of their careers, while creating the organisational structures, frameworks and practices needed for talent to move, develop and be deployed effectively across BSI.
Working closely with senior business and People leaders, you will lead our enterprise approach to career development, talent management and succession planning. You will help shape career pathways and associated role architecture, and targeted talent pipelines, ensuring BSI has the skills and leadership capability needed to deliver its future priorities.
This is an opportunity to influence talent strategy at an enterprise level, balancing long-term organisational thinking with the practical delivery of programmes that improve career opportunities, succession strength and internal movement.
Key Responsibilities
Shape and deliver BSI’s enterprise talent, careers and internal progression strategy.
Continue to develop BSI’s careers proposition, ensuring colleagues have clear access to career opportunities, resources and development support.
Lead enterprise career engagement activities, including career campaigns, Careers Week and digital career channels.
Maintain and improve the Careers Hub and associated Workday talent and careers functionality.
Build colleague and manager capability to support meaningful career, development and succession conversations.
Lead the Mid-Year Review process as a key enabler of career planning and colleague development.
Define and embed practical careers and development approaches to increase internal mobility and the flexible deployment of talent.
Shape role architecture, career pathways and skills frameworks that make movement between roles and functions easier.
Identify and address structural, cultural and behavioural barriers to internal career progression.
Partner with Talent Acquisition to promote an internal-first approach to hiring and increase confidence in appointing high-potential colleagues into stretch opportunities.
Support transformation programmes and organisation design by identifying the talent, career and succession implications of structural decisions.
Develop approaches that improve internal appointments to critical roles and reduce reliance on external hiring where appropriate.
Lead and evolve enterprise talent and succession processes, strengthening succession readiness and development planning.
Provide the Board and Group Leadership Team with clear insight into talent risks, pipeline strength and succession coverage.
Identify business-critical talent populations and develop targeted reskilling, upskilling and pipeline strategies.
Shape targeted early careers and external social sustainability initiatives aligned to business needs and BSI’s purpose.
What we’re looking for
Essential
Significant experience across careers strategy and development within a global, technically professional organisation.
Experience leading enterprise talent and succession planning processes.
Experience designing and implementing career frameworks and associated role architecture or skills-based approaches in a complex technical professionalism.
Experience designing careers acceleration initiatives to drive greater internal progression.
Understanding and experience advising on the implications for careers, capability and talent pipelines in organisation design, operating models and restructuring.
Experience enabling organisational change and transformation through workforce planning, talent deployment or career mapping.
Strong strategic thinking with the ability to translate business priorities into practical talent solutions.
Highly developed stakeholder management and influencing skills, including experience working with senior leaders.
Strong consultancy capability, with the ability to diagnose organisational issues and define targeted interventions.
Experience using data and insight to identify talent risks and support decision-making.
Ability to balance strategic direction with operational delivery.
Strong project leadership, prioritisation and organisational skills.
A collaborative and inclusive approach, with the ability to work effectively across functions, regions and organisational boundaries.
Degree-level education or equivalent professional experience.
Highly desirable
Experience using Workday talent and careers functionality.
Experience shaping targeted early careers strategies.
CIPD qualification or equivalent.
Experience managing external suppliers or partners.
Knowledge of the Apprenticeship Levy.
Experience creating digital learning or career content using tools such as Articulate Rise or Synthesia.
Salary Range:
UK = £72,750 - £87,000
The advertised salary range reflects the level, scope and responsibilities of the role. Starting salary within that range will be determined based on experience, skills, market considerations and alignment with internal equity principles.
