Forward Deployed Engineer

AgilityIO is a software development firm that designs and builds custom applications for startups and Fortune 500 companies, with a global team of over 400 developers, QA engineers, project managers, and UX/UI designers with offices in New York City and Vietnam.

About the Role

We hire Forward Deployed Engineers to turn ambiguous client problems into production outcomes. You will work directly with client stakeholders, learn unfamiliar systems, and build across whatever technical boundaries the work requires — frontend, backend, infrastructure, or all three.

You are expected to use approved AI tools wherever they improve development without violating client constraints. You remain personally responsible for the questions you ask, the decisions you make, the evidence behind them, and the code you ship.

This is not a quiet ticket queue. In the same engagement, you may move between discovery, implementation, deployment, and stakeholder communication. You should be comfortable making progress with incomplete context and comfortable surfacing uncertainty early rather than working around it silently.

Responsibilities

• Enter unfamiliar client codebases and environments and quickly build an accurate picture of the system and the problem

• Clarify ambiguous requests directly with client stakeholders before, and while, building

• Design and build solutions across the technical boundaries the engagement requires, rather than staying inside a single layer of the stack

• Use approved AI tools deliberately, and verify their output rather than shipping it on trust

• Carry work through to production — deployment, handoff, and adoption — not just a merged pull request

• Communicate progress, risk, and open questions clearly and early to both technical and non-technical stakeholders

• Adjust your approach to the scope, stakes, and autonomy of each engagement

Required Qualifications

• Strong software engineering fundamentals, demonstrated across more than one stack or technical layer

• Proven ability to diagnose unfamiliar systems and ambiguous requirements without extensive hand-holding

• Disciplined use and verification of AI-generated code and outputs — you can explain and defend anything you ship

• Clear, direct written and verbal communication with client stakeholders in English

• A track record of ownership through production readiness, not just feature completion

• Ability to maintain synchronous working-hours overlap with the clients you are assigned to support

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working client-side or in a consulting / professional-services model

• Exposure to multiple cloud platforms, frameworks, or languages, rather than deep specialization in only one

• Experience mentoring or reviewing the work of other engineers

• Comfort operating with limited product or technical documentation

A note on fit: because this role spans clients, stacks, and domains, we evaluate what you have actually demonstrated, where your exposure is limited, and what you have not used — rather than requiring a fixed technology checklist. Specific stack, domain, and scheduling requirements for a given engagement will be shared and discussed with you as part of the process.
