We are seeking a highly motivated Field Service Engineer to support advanced microscopy systems used in neuroscience and biomedical research laboratories across Europe.

This position is primarily focused on installation, maintenance, technical support, and customer training of sophisticated microscopy instrumentation. The successful candidate will work closely with customers to ensure optimal system performance and uptime while developing deep expertise in optical, laser, mechanical, electronic, and software subsystems.

 

An extended training program at our U.S. factory and field locations will be provided to ensure the successful candidate develops the technical and service skills required for independent field responsibility.

 

This role provides an excellent opportunity for individuals with a background in neuroscience, biomedical engineering, physics, optics, or related disciplines to apply their technical knowledge in a customer-facing field engineering environment.

 

The position is location‑flexible within the EU, provided there is good access to international travel. The role requires extensive travel across Europe (typically 60–70%).

Responsibilities

Field Service & Technical Support

  • Install, qualify, maintain, and repair multiphoton microscopy systems at customer sites throughout Europe.
  • Diagnose and resolve optical, laser, electronic, mechanical, and software-related issues.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, system calibrations, and performance verification according to established procedures.
  • Support additional microscopy product lines following successful training and certification.
  • Provide remote troubleshooting and technical assistance.
  • Document service activities, corrective actions, and customer interactions within the service management system.
  • Escalate complex technical issues and collaborate with engineering and product development teams when needed.
  • Ensure high levels of customer satisfaction through responsive and professional support.

Customer Support & Training

  • Provide basic operational training for customers following installation or service activities.
  • Develop strong customer relationships through reliable technical support.
  • Communicate technical information clearly to researchers, laboratory managers, and facility staff.
  • Collect and communicate customer feedback to internal engineering and product teams.

Team Collaboration

  • Work closely with senior field service engineers, product specialists, and R&D teams.
  • Participate in technical training programs and continuous professional development activities.
  • Contribute to service best practices and knowledge-sharing initiatives.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • M.S. in Neuroscience, Biomedical Engineering, Physics, Optics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Experience with microscopy, optical instrumentation, lasers, imaging systems, or similar scientific equipment.
  • Strong technical aptitude and interest in instrumentation, troubleshooting, and field service.
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues using a systematic approach.
  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively across Europe (typically 60-70%).
  • Willingness and ability to participate in training in the United States.
  • Fluency in English; additional European languages are beneficial.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to work independently.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with multiphoton, confocal, or advanced optical microscopy systems.
  • Exposure to laser-based, optical, electronic, or electromechanical systems.
  • Prior experience in field service, technical support, laboratory instrumentation, or customer-facing technical roles.
  • Familiarity with scientific research environments and laboratory workflows.
  • Basic knowledge of imaging software and data analysis tools.
