Department Overview

The OHSU Professional Coding team is dedicated to promoting coding excellence through accurate, compliant, and efficient coding practices that support quality patient care, regulatory integrity, and revenue cycle performance. As a centralized enterprise function, the team partners closely with clinical, operational, and revenue cycle stakeholders to ensure consistency, optimize processes, and advance organizational goals across a complex academic healthcare environment.

Function/Duties of Position

The Enterprise Coding Manager provides strategic and operational leadership for enterprise coding services, directing coding operations and performance to ensure accurate, compliant, and efficient service delivery aligned with organizational priorities, regulatory requirements, and revenue cycle goals. In partnership with the Assistant Director and Director of Enterprise Coding, the Manager helps develop and execute departmental strategies, establish operational priorities, and drive initiatives that support organizational objectives and industry best practices.

 

Coding Operations Management

  • Contribute to strategic planning, resource allocation, and operational goal setting to support enterprise coding services and organizational objectives.
  • Direct coding operations, workflow strategy, capacity planning, and resource allocation to achieve established productivity, quality, turnaround time, compliance, and revenue cycle performance goals.
  • Serve as an operational leader and coding subject matter expert, providing guidance on complex coding and documentation issues and ensuring accurate, compliant code assignment.
  • Establish, monitor, and evaluate operational performance metrics, including productivity, quality, audit, compliance, and service-level performance; implement corrective actions and continuous improvement initiatives to achieve departmental goals.
  • Act as a key liaison among coding, revenue cycle, providers, clinic leadership, and external stakeholders to promote operational alignment and resolve coding-related issues.
  • Lead coding education, policy development, process improvement, and change management initiatives in collaboration with the Assistant Director to enhance operational efficiency, regulatory compliance, and implementation of coding and documentation updates.
  • Participate in audits, committees, and quality improvement activities, using findings and data analysis to support continuous improvement and implementation of corrective actions and operational enhancements.

Personnel/Team Management

  • Lead and manage coding staff, including workforce planning, staffing, onboarding, work assignment, training, cross-training, attendance management, and ongoing staff development to support operational effectiveness and employee growth.
  • Oversee the performance management lifecycle, including goal setting, performance evaluations, development planning, coaching, and corrective action, while establishing and monitoring standards for productivity, quality, accuracy, competency, and compliance.
  • Promote employee engagement, professional development, and cross-training to strengthen team performance and operational flexibility.
  • Ensure compliance with organizational policies related to attendance, timekeeping, and workforce management.
  • Communicate organizational priorities and departmental objectives while fostering a collaborative and accountable team culture.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Health Information Management, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum 3 years of management or supervisory experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in healthcare setting.
  • CPC, CCS, or equivalent certification.
  • Knowledge of ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPC coding guidelines.
  • Knowledge of coding and documentation compliance related to CMS, JACHO, COP and other regulatory agencies is required.
  • Highly effective communications; oral and written.
  • Leadership methods in performance improvement/quality management.
  • Strong knowledge of ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS.

  • Knowledge of CMS and compliance requirements.

  • Ability to manage staff performance and workflows.

  • Strong communication and analytical skills.

  • Knowledge of revenue cycle operations. 

  • Ability to effectively problem solve and mitigate complex coding scenarios.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in related field.
  • Experience in multi-specialty or academic medical center coding environment.
  • Experience with EPIC or similar systems.
  • Specialty certifications.
