The Electrical Estimator will lead preconstruction and estimating for large-scale modular data center projects, including quantifying scopes and pricing labor and materials. They will also perform design verification and coordinate with BIM teams to ensure constructible electrical conveyance systems.
IES is seeking an experienced Electrical Estimator to lead electrical preconstruction and estimating for large-scale, modular data center projects serving hyperscale clients. This role blends senior-level electrical estimating with hands-on operational and field knowledge — pricing and preparing complex data center electrical scopes, verifying constructible designs, and partnering with CAD / BIM teams to turn engineered drawings into buildable conveyance systems. The ideal candidate is an operator who has estimated their own work: someone who understands hyperscale data center electrical construction from the field up and can independently price, plan, and help win the work.
Key Responsibilities
Estimating & Preconstruction
• Develop accurate, competitive electrical estimates for large-scale hyperscale and modular data center projects, including conveyance (pathways) and related electrical distribution systems.
• Lead preconstruction and pre-sales activities — quantifying scope, pricing labor and material, and preparing projects for construction.
• Support design-build scopes, RFI responses, and submittal review throughout preconstruction.
• Contribute to value engineering that optimizes electrical systems for cost, reliability, and constructability.
Design Verification & BIM Coordination
• Perform design verification on electrical drawings — interpreting endpoint and single-line information and field-engineering conduit and conveyance pathways.
• Partner with CAD / BIM and modeling teams to translate designs into accurate, constructible BIM models, directing how conduit and pathways should be routed.
• Coordinate electrical scope with structural (including interior structural steel), mechanical, and low-voltage teams.
Bid Review & Procurement
• Review and vet subcontractor bids and sub-estimates for accuracy and completeness.
• Review and validate electrical estimates from other IES segments and partners.
• Develop prefabrication and kitting strategies that improve material procurement efficiency and reduce field labor.
Field & Cross-Functional Support
• Provide field engineering and installation guidance grounded in hands-on electrical construction experience.
• Participate in project kickoffs, progress reviews, and client-facing preconstruction discussions.
• Support the broader modular data center team across estimating, operations, and coordination — a small team where multiple hats are worn.
Required
• Extensive electrical estimating experience, with documented success pricing and winning large-scale data center electrical work.
• Hyperscale data center experience — strong understanding of how conveyance and electrical distribution are designed and installed in these facilities.
• Hands-on operational / field background in electrical construction (e.g., journeyman electrician, electrical project manager or superintendent, or operations manager who has estimated their own work).
• Proficiency with electrical estimating software (AccuBid) and construction tools such as Bluebeam, Procore, and Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC).
• Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, single-line diagrams, specifications, and technical documents.
• Working knowledge of applicable codes and standards, including NEC / NFPA 70, NFPA 75, NFPA 76, and TIA-942.
• Ability to work independently and apply senior-level judgment.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites and fabrication facilities (approximately 25–30%).
Preferred
• Experience with modular or prefabricated data center delivery.
• Familiarity with mission-critical electrical systems (UPS, backup generation, automatic transfer switches, grounding and bonding) and data center reliability standards such as Uptime Institute Tier levels.
• Basic AutoCAD proficiency and comfort working alongside BIM / CAD modeling teams.
• Familiarity with low-voltage and structured cabling in data center environments.
• Experience with design-build project delivery in a contractor environment.
Working Conditions
• Remote work considered, with a preference for Houston-based candidates.
• Approximately 25–30% travel to project sites and fabrication facilities.
• Work may involve exposure to active construction and fabrication environments.
