In this strategic and hands-on individual contributor role, you will lead cross-functional development programs, translate strategy into integrated execution plans, and support program-level decisions. You will collaborate with colleagues across the organization who are committed to developing innovative therapies for patients.

This is a U.S.-based remote role supporting colleagues across the country. Abeona's manufacturing facilities are in Cleveland, Ohio.

Current projects are focused primarily on preclinical and IND-enabling programs, with responsibilities expected to span the full development lifecycle.

Your day-to-day as Director, Program Manager

Reporting to the VP, Program Leadership, the Director, Program Manager is accountable for the integrated planning and execution of assigned programs within Abeona's portfolio. The role partners closely with the Program Lead and functional leaders to translate strategy and governance decisions into coordinated timelines, resources, risks, and deliverables that support program and corporate goals.

This is an individual-contributor leadership role with responsibility for influencing cross-functional teams, strengthening program-management practices, and advancing gene therapy programs in a highly regulated environment.

Schedule

This is a remote role, with core work hours from Monday to Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. (ET). Occasional work outside core hours, including early mornings, evenings, or weekends, may be required. This position works collaboratively with colleagues across the U.S., so some flexibility is required depending on the successful candidate's location.

You are an experienced biopharma program manager who can turn complex cell and gene therapy strategies into practical, integrated plans. You build productive partnerships across functions, anticipate risks and dependencies, and maintain accountability for timelines, resources, budgets, and deliverables. You communicate clearly with program and functional leaders, use data and sound judgment to support decisions, and bring a collaborative, improvement-oriented approach to advancing programs and strengthening the Program Leadership function.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

Program Strategy and Governance

  • Supports strategic leadership and governance for assigned programs.
  • Develops and maintains the integrated program plan, critical path, and cross-functional milestones.
  • Ensures alignment among program strategy, functional plans, corporate priorities, and governance decisions.
  • Facilitates decision-focused program team meetings, documents key decisions and actions, and escalates material risks and tradeoffs.

Integrated Planning and Execution

  • Coordinates critical program workstreams and timelines.
  • Partners with functional sub-teams to ensure deliverables are completed on time, within budget, and in accordance with quality standards and program goals.
  • Builds effective partnerships with functional leaders to align priorities, resolve dependencies, and maintain accountability for program deliverables.
  • Coordinates the development and maintenance of program documents, plans, trackers, and decision materials.

Risk, Resource, and Budget Management

  • Develops program-planning scenarios; identifies, assesses, and monitors risks with input from functional leaders; and coordinates mitigation and issue-resolution plans.
  • Recognizes when corrective action is needed and supports root-cause analysis and recovery planning.
  • Coordinates cross-functional resource planning and provides the tools, data, and reporting needed to develop accurate resource estimates and identify capacity constraints.
  • Partners with Finance and functional leaders to monitor the consolidated program budget and forecast material variances.

Executive Reporting and Decision Support

  • Develops decision-quality program materials, dashboards, integrated plans, and reports that clearly communicate progress, risks, dependencies, and recommended actions.
  • Applies program-management tools to collect metrics, analyze program performance data, and improve reporting quality.
  • Develops and implements standards, templates, checklists, and analytical tools that strengthen planning, decision-making, and process improvement.

Organizational Leadership and Collaboration

  • Promotes consistent use of program-management standards and tools, shares best practices, and contributes to the continued development of the Program Leadership function.

Required Qualifications

The knowledge and skills required to be successful in the role are:

  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific, technical, or related field, and a minimum of 7 years of cross-functional program or project management experience within the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry.
  • Experience supporting cell and gene therapy development programs.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of pharma/biotech development and success coordinating complex, cross-functional programs through integrated planning, risk management, and disciplined execution.
  • Ability to synthesize complex program data into clear risks, options, and recommendations for program and functional leaders.
  • Ability to hold oneself and others accountable for commitments in a productive and assertive manner.
  • Proficiency with program-planning, scheduling, analysis, and presentation tools, including Microsoft Project, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Track record of facilitating productive collaboration and decisions across geographically and culturally diverse teams.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ten or more years of progressively responsible program or project management experience in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry.
  • Advanced degree in a scientific, technical, or related field.
  • Oncology development experience.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.

Compensation and Benefits

  • The anticipated U.S. base salary range for this position is $215,000–$230,000. Actual compensation will depend on experience, qualifications, and work location.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to experience prolonged sitting, some bending, stooping, and stretching. Hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator, and other office equipment is required. A normal range of hearing and vision correctable to 20/20 is required. Must be able to travel between company sites or to vendor locations, as needed.
