General Summary

The Director, Product Management leads product strategy, vision, and execution for a critical product area at EMPLOYERS. This role owns the end-to-end product lifecycle-from customer insight and strategy development through roadmap prioritization, team leadership, and go-to-market execution. The Director translates corporate objectives and customer needs into data-driven product decisions, manages a team of product managers, and aligns cross-functional partners (engineering, design, data, business operations) to deliver measurable customer and business impact. This leader champions a culture of innovation, customer obsession, and data-driven decision-making.

The ideal candidate is a seasoned product leader with a proven track record of building and shipping successful digital products. They are customer-obsessed, data-driven, and skilled at translating complex customer and business needs into clear strategy and execution. They excel at leading and developing teams, have strong executive presence, and are comfortable navigating ambiguity and rapid change. They bring strategic thinking and business acumen to product decisions, with strong communication skills and the ability to influence across organizational boundaries. They are passionate about innovation, embrace experimentation, and are energized by the challenge of transforming how EMPLOYERS' customers engage with insurance products.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Product Vision & Strategy: Develop and communicate a compelling product vision that aligns with EMPLOYERS' strategic objectives and market positioning. Build a data-driven product roadmap informed by customer research, competitive analysis, market trends, and corporate OKRs. Define success metrics and KPIs for the product area. Conduct regular strategy reviews and adjust roadmap based on performance data and market feedback. Lead initiative intake process, evaluate requests against strategic fit, and make prioritization trade-offs. Serve as thought partner to executive sponsors on product direction and investment decisions.

Team Leadership & Development: Recruit, onboard, and develop a high-performing product management team. Provide coaching and mentorship to product managers, helping them grow product craft, leadership skills, and strategic thinking. Set clear expectations and accountability for team members. Foster a culture of psychological safety, continuous learning, and experimentation. Conduct regular one-on-ones and performance reviews. Identify and develop internal talent for career progression. Build team goals aligned to product strategy and corporate objectives.

Customer Insight & User Research: Drive a deep understanding of customer needs, pain points, and behaviors at both individual and cohort levels. Establish and lead a structured voice-of-customer program. Participate in user research, customer interviews, and usability studies. Translate customer insights into product requirements and feature prioritization. Own the ongoing analysis of customer feedback, NPS, and product usage data. Challenge the team to validate assumptions and decisions with evidence. Communicate customer stories and learnings to cross-functional partners and leadership.

Cross-Functional Leadership & Alignment: Lead and align engineering, design, analytics, marketing, and business operations teams around shared product vision and roadmap. Facilitate cross-functional planning, dependency management, and conflict resolution. Communicate product priorities, experiments, and decisions clearly to diverse audiences (individual contributors, managers, executives). Manage engagement with product design and ensure consistent validation of voice-of-customer throughout development. Establish regular cadence for cross-functional reviews and status updates. Drive accountability for delivery and impact across teams.

Execution & Impact Measurement: Ensure disciplined execution against the product roadmap. Establish clear go/no-go gates and decision criteria at each stage of product development. Monitor product performance metrics, adoption rates, and customer satisfaction continuously. Document and communicate new capabilities releases and their business impact to stakeholders. Conduct post-launch reviews to assess outcomes against objectives and identify lessons learned. Manage product portfolio tradeoffs, investment allocation, and resource prioritization. Drive a mindset of experimentation, learning, and rapid iteration.

Organizational Contribution: Participate actively in defining product management pathways and organizational design. Contribute to product and company culture through mentorship and collaboration. Stay informed of industry trends, competitive landscape, and emerging technologies. Represent product function in executive forums and strategic planning sessions. Support cross-product initiatives and company-wide priorities as needed.

Background and Experience/Expertise

  •  10+ years of product management experience in technology, SaaS, or complex enterprise environments.
  • 3+ years of experience leading and developing product management teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop product strategy, build roadmaps from conception to launch, and drive product vision.
  • Proven track record of translating customer insights and data into product decisions and delivering measurable business impact.
  • Strong cross-functional relationship-building and collaboration skills; ability to influence without authority.
  • Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills with comfort interpreting data and making data-driven decisions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to communicate complex product ideas clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Comfort with ambiguity, rapid change, and a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience in insurance, financial services, or regulated industries.
  • Background in digital transformation or enterprise software product management.
  • Familiarity with agile development methodologies and scaled frameworks (SAFe, Scrum).
  • Hands-on experience with AI/LLM tools and integrating AI capabilities into product strategy.

 

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience in a technical field is preferred. Bachelor's degree in business, computer science, or related field. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Work Environment:

  • Remote: This role is a remote (work from home (WFH) opportunity, and only open to candidates currently located in the United States and able to work without sponsorship.
  • It requires a suitable space that provides a private and quiet workplace.
  • Expected Work Hours: Schedules are set to accommodate the requirements of the position and the needs of the organization and may be adjusted as needed.
  • Travel: May be required to travel to off-site location(s) to attend meetings, as necessary
