The Design and Production Assistant will oversee the typesetting of book interiors and manage the production of electronic files for publication. They will also collaborate with editors to perform proof corrections and assist the production team with backlist updates and design tasks.

| Job Description: |
50% Interior Design: Oversee the typesetting of 30 book interiors per year as assigned and provide suitable electronic files for production. Work directly with in-house manuscript editors to make page proof corrections to text, providing PDF files for proofreading, and creating final packaged InDesign files and print-ready PDFs. 25% Reprints: Work with production team to update backlist files for reprinting and new formats. 15% Production and design assistance: Assist the production team and book designer with book-related tasks as requested. 5% Software and Technology: Stay updated on relevant design software and technology and pursue professional development opportunities. 5% Other clerical tasks as assigned (file cleanup, organization projects, etc.). |
| Expected Salary: |
$17 - $18 per hour |
| Required Qualifications: |
Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. |
| Preferred: |
Education: Bachelor's degree in graphic design or related field. Experience: Three or more years of experience in book text design. Experience with a university press, academic book publisher, or other nonprofit book publisher. Skills: Expertise designing and typesetting complicated scholarly books including charts, tables, and special characters. High level of expertise in Adobe InDesign using styles. Experience in designing and producing typeset book files using the Scribe XML Well-Formed Document Workflow. |
