Royal Credit Union is seeking an experienced accounting leader to serve as our Controller and lead Royal’s controllership function. In this role, you will build and oversee the operating model that produces trusted financial information. You will bring together accounting operations, financial reporting, policy, controls, regulatory reporting, systems, and financial data into a consistent and scalable framework. You will establish clear ownership and standards, strengthen accounting quality and audit readiness, develop the accounting team, and partner across Royal to ensure accounting requirements are built into business decisions and organizational change.

What You'll Do:
- Lead Royal’s controllership operating model. Translate accounting strategy into an integrated system of ownership, processes, controls, financial data, and management routines that produces reliable results and scales with Royal’s growth.
- Own financial reporting integrity and accounting quality. Govern the close, financial statements, reconciliations, account certification, regulatory reporting, and tax reporting, ensuring information is accurate, timely, well-supported, and compliant with GAAP and regulatory requirements.
- Establish accounting policy, controls, and review standards. Serve as Royal’s senior technical accounting authority, maintain the Accounting Policy and Control Frameworks, and ensure significant transactions, estimates, products, systems, and business initiatives receive appropriate accounting evaluation and risk-based review.
- Maintain audit and examination readiness. Lead Accounting’s relationships with external auditors and examiners, ensure requests and conclusions are properly supported, and drive sustainable remediation of accounting-related findings and control deficiencies.
- Govern trusted financial information. Establish the accounting requirements, reconciliation standards, ownership, and controls for certified financial data used in financial, regulatory, management, and analytical reporting.
- Build scalable accounting operations. Clarify ownership, standardize processes, strengthen documentation and backup coverage, and use technology and automation to improve accounting quality, capacity, visibility, and control effectiveness.
- Lead and develop the accounting organization. Establish clear expectations, actively manage workload and priorities, develop technical and leadership capabilities, strengthen succession and cross-training, and hold the team accountable for quality, ownership, and continuous improvement.
- Serve as the accounting authority in organizational decisions. Partner across Finance, Business Intelligence, Technology, Risk, and business units to ensure accounting requirements are incorporated into systems, reporting, products, contracts, and strategic initiatives from the beginning.
- Support the VP, Accounting. Provide clear visibility into accounting results, risks, capacity, and priorities, and serve as backup within delegated authority.
- Compensation: $112,000 - $172,000 (candidates with significant related experience may be higher). In addition, this role is eligible for a performance bonus at a target amount of 15% of annual salary.

What's Needed For This Position:
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related business discipline.
- Five (5) years of progressive accounting experience.
- Three (3) years of financial institution or financial services accounting experience.
- One (1) year of leadership and/or leadership development and training.
- Experience preparing and reviewing financial statements.
- Must be bondable and maintain that status throughout employment.
We'd Love To See:
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
- Accounting policy development experience.
- Internal controls and audit coordination experience.
- Regulatory reporting experience.
- Enterprise system implementation experience.
- Financial data governance or reporting platform experience and data extraction tools (SQL, Power BI, Snowflake).

- Strong analytical and accounting skills, with the ability to interpret complex issues, evaluate alternatives, and exercise judgment where financial, operational, and risk considerations compete.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, and develop team members through performance expectations, accountability, and individualized development planning.
- Ability to influence and build alignment across departments and business units, persuading stakeholders in sensitive and complex situations while preserving relationships.
- Deep working knowledge of GAAP, regulatory reporting requirements, and internal control design in a financial institution environment.
- Commitment to standardization, automation, and continuous improvement that supports sustainable, scalable operations.
- Readily learns new technologies and uses Royal's digital solutions effectively; expert understanding of all Microsoft Office products.
Work Schedule
- Full-Time, working 40+ hours per week. Hours may vary between business hours Monday through Friday, with additional time as needed to support close cycles, audits, examinations, and regulatory filing deadlines
- Fully remote position, with occasional travel to Royal's Corporate Center in Eau Claire, WI for training and meetings
Training
- Prior to starting a normal work schedule, new Royal team members must attend Foundation Training at our Corporate Center in Eau Claire, WI from 9:00am - 4:30pm on Monday and Tuesday during their first week of employment. Out-of-town learners may be eligible for reimbursement of travel and lodging expenses, subject to Royal's travel and expense reimbursement guidelines
