POSITION SUMMARY:  

MCD Global Health has entered a period of significant growth and seeks a Chief Financial Officer who will strategically scale-up financial operations to meet the increasingly complex needs of the newly expanded organization. The CFO will report directly to the President & CEO and serve as a member of the Executive Leadership Team. The CFO will ensure that the organization is compliant with all fiduciary, legal, and statutory requirements and has the proper internal controls, processes, and systems in place to effectively manage the organization and mitigate risks and contribute to the achievement of the mission. The CFO will serve as the primary staff liaison to the Board of Directors’ Finance Committee. The CFO will manage a Finance team of seven.

THIS POSITION IS CONTINGENT UPON FUNDING.

LOCATION AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: The primary location of this position is remote/home based.  Job responsibilities may require periodic travel to meetings, conferences, training, and other related activities, and may require a staff member to be in various public places, (e.g., hotel conference rooms). Employees may opt for a hybrid arrangement if they are within commuting distance to our Hallowell, ME office. 

PAY GRADE:  Grade 10; salary will vary by geographical location. 

Essential Job Functions: 

  • Financial Planning & Analysis:  Set the long-term financial direction for the organization and model the cost of ongoing and future programs and operations, with a particular focus on treasury management. Support decision-making by providing insight into MCD’s financial performance and future outlook.  

  • Budgeting and Forecasting:  Ensure transparency, accountability, and proper budget management. Lead the annual budgeting process through Board of Directors’ approval. Oversee the twice annual budget reforecasting process.  

  • Financial Reporting and Grant Management:  Prepare monthly financial statements as well as budget reports for all project and overhead accounts, making sure that funds are spent as per donor intent. Ensure timeliness, accuracy, and usefulness of regular and ad hoc financial information provided to staff members, Board of Directors, funders, and regulatory agencies. Work closely with programs staff to ensure that MCD’s projects achieve >90% of spending to budget/forecast. 

  • Compliance and Risk: Ensure that MCD follows U.S. Government/IRS and donor regulations. Manage annual external audit and submission of the Form 990. Periodically review and update financial policy, procedure, and controls to maximize effectiveness and mitigate risk. Work together with the Chief Operating Officer to ensure programs are compliant with national, state, and local regulations in all jurisdictions where MCD Global Health operates, both domestically and internationally. 


  • A Master’s degree in accounting, finance, business or related discipline 

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) certification would constitute an advantage 

  • At least 15 years of progressive financial management experience, including executive-level leadership and at least five years supervising staff 

  • Experience leading a Finance team at a non-profit or for-profit organization with an annual budget of at least $50 million, preferably in the public health or healthcare sector

  • Experience working with a variety of different funder types, including both public and private

  • Fluency in written and spoken English is required; proficiency in Spanish, French, or Portuguese would constitute an advantage 

  • Up to 10% domestic and international travel 

  • Individuals who are energetic self-starters, who are able to function comfortably in a team environment and relate well to co-workers and the public, who are comfortable with change and have a positive “can do” attitude, are well suited to this position. This position requires flexibility and the ability to manage time and multiple tasks.
