Position Summary

 

The Business Development Manager (BDM) is responsible for driving profitable growth across a defined portfolio of customers, products, and supplier partners within the Nutrition division. This role owns the full commercial lifecycle—from opportunity identification through execution—while ensuring alignment across sales, supply chain, quality, and customer service.


The BDM operates as a business owner for their portfolio, balancing growth, margin, working capital, and customer experience. Success in this role requires strong commercial judgment, cross-functional leadership, and proactive management of opportunities, risks, and customer relationships.

Responsibilities will include:

 

Commercial Ownership & Growth

  • Own and grow a defined portfolio of customers, products, and suppliers, with full accountability for revenue, margin, and pipeline development
  • Identify and convert new business opportunities across existing accounts and new customers.
  • Drive sales growth above baseline through proactive prospecting, portfolio expansion, and strategic account development.
  • Lead pricing, positioning, and commercial negotiations in alignment with company targets.

Customer & Market Development

 

  • Build and maintain strong, relationship-driven engagement with key customers and decision-makers.
  • Develop a deep understanding of customer needs, applications, and pipeline opportunities.
  • Monitor market dynamics including demand trends, competitive activity, and supplier landscape.
  • Represent the company in customer meetings, trade shows, and industry events.



Portfolio & Forecast Management

 

  • Maintain accurate pipelines, forecasts, and demand visibility for assigned portfolio.
  • Collaborate with supply chain and procurement to align inventory strategy with customer demand and working capital targets.
  • Actively manage inventory exposure, including slow-moving or at-risk stock, and drive mitigation actions.


Cross-Functional Execution

 

  • Act as the primary commercial point of coordination across Customer Service, Supply Chain, Quality, Regulatory, and Finance.
  • Ensure smooth order execution, clear communication, and proactive resolution of issues impacting customer experience.
  • Escalate and drive resolution of operational, quality, or supply challenges with clear ownership and accountability.

Operational Excellence & Process Discipline

 

  • Maintain strong discipline around CRM usage, call reporting, pipeline tracking, and opportunity management.
  • Drive efficiencies in how information is shared across teams to improve speed and execution.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives across order-to-cash, forecasting accuracy, and internal processes.

Financial & Risk Management

 

  • Support forecasting, budgeting, and performance tracking for assigned portfolio.
  • Partner with Finance and Customer Service to manage receivables, resolve disputes, and mitigate credit risk.
  • Evaluate commercial decisions with a balance of growth, margin, and risk considerations.

 

 

The salary range for the position of Business Development Manager is $120,000 - $140,000 per year. Many factors go into determining employee pay within the range including prior experience, current skills, location/labor market, internal equity and other factors as permitted by law.

Required Experience & Knowledge

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, Life Sciences, Business, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in B2B sales, ingredient distribution, branded ingredients sales, contract manufacturing or related commercial roles.
  • Experience in nutraceuticals and specialty ingredients strongly preferred.
  • Strong commercial acumen with the ability to balance growth, margin, and operational realities.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills across internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to operate cross-functionally and drive execution without direct authority.
  • Analytical mindset with ability to interpret market data, forecasts, and financial impact.
  • Highly organized, proactive, and accountable with strong follow-through.
  • Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, evolving, and global environment.
  • Keen analytic, organization and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; experience in effectively communicating key data, including presentations to customers and senior management.
