AI Developer (Python/ Django)

About the Role

We are seeking a skilled Python / Django Developer with strong full-stack development experience and a passion for AI-assisted software development. You will build and maintain web applications, client automations, and SaaS products using Python, Django, and Claude Code.

This role goes beyond traditional software development. You will translate client requirements into clear specifications and step-by-step implementation plans, use AI coding tools to build features efficiently, and critically review, test, and refine the generated code to ensure quality and reliability.

You will work with an established application foundation and a library of reusable components, prioritising existing solutions over unnecessary redevelopment. The ideal candidate combines strong technical fundamentals with sound engineering judgement, attention to detail, and the ability to identify and correct AI-generated code that does not meet requirements.

You will be working with an Australian software consultancy that develops business automation solutions and SaaS products. The organisation helps businesses streamline document-heavy processes involving invoices, emails, spreadsheets, and other operational workflows.

The team follows a structured, AI-assisted development approach, using established application foundations, reusable software components, and systematic testing to deliver reliable solutions efficiently. This is an opportunity to contribute to practical software products while developing expertise in AI-assisted engineering practices.

Ideal Profile

Core Development Experience

• At least 3 years of professional full-stack development experience, including a minimum of two years working with Python and Django.
• Strong understanding of Django fundamentals, including ORM, models, migrations, views, forms, templates, and the Django admin interface.
• Experience working with PostgreSQL and writing accurate, efficient database queries.
• Practical experience developing, maintaining, and debugging web applications.

AI-Assisted Development

• Regular, hands-on use of AI coding tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, or similar platforms.
• Ability to review AI-generated code critically, identify errors, and make appropriate corrections.
• Experience translating requirements into clear technical specifications and implementation plans before development.
• A strong preference for reusable components and existing solutions rather than unnecessary custom development.
• Willingness to use AI tools for code generation, testing, and documentation while maintaining responsibility for code quality.

Testing & Engineering Practices

• Experience writing and maintaining automated tests, with a strong commitment to test-driven quality practices.
• Confidence using Git, pull requests, and code reviews.
• Ability to troubleshoot issues systematically and ensure tests pass throughout development.
• Understanding of secure coding practices, particularly permissions, multi-tenant data, and safe file uploads.

Communication & Work Management

• Strong written English, with the ability to prepare clear specifications, development plans, handover notes, and client updates.
• Good organisational skills and the ability to work independently from agreed plans.
• A commitment to honest progress reporting, timely escalation of blockers, and clear documentation.
• A proactive approach to identifying reusable improvements and preventing recurring defects.

Desirable Experience

• Advanced familiarity with Claude Code, including skills, plans, and subagents.
• Experience with SaaS Pegasus or similar Django starter kits.
• Knowledge of Tailwind CSS, HTMX, and Alpine.js.
• Experience with Celery, Redis, and background processing.
• Familiarity with Stripe, Xero, Microsoft Graph, Microsoft 365, and SharePoint integrations.
• Experience with Docker, Render, or Azure Container Apps.
• Experience building AI-powered applications using Claude or OpenAI APIs, including prompts, structured outputs, and document extraction.

Responsibilities

Application & Feature Development

• Develop and maintain Python/Django applications, client automations, and SaaS product features based on agreed specifications and implementation plans.
• Establish new projects using the organisation's existing application foundation and install appropriate reusable components.
• Build user interfaces using established UI components, Django templates, Tailwind CSS, HTMX, and related technologies.
• Reuse existing functionality wherever possible and develop new components only when necessary.

AI-Assisted Software Development

• Use Claude Code as a core part of the development workflow to generate code, tests, and documentation.
• Translate requirements into structured specifications and step-by-step development plans before implementation.
• Guide AI-assisted development through manageable tasks, reviewing the output carefully at each stage.
• Identify and correct inaccurate, incomplete, or unsuitable AI-generated code before it reaches production.
• Apply sound technical judgement when evaluating implementation approaches and generated solutions.

Testing & Quality Assurance

• Write and execute automated tests using tools such as pytest and Playwright.
• Run relevant tests after each development task and ensure the complete test suite passes before delivery.
• Review higher-risk code involving financial transactions, permissions, data deletion, and security with particular care.
• Participate in code reviews, identify defects, and minimise avoidable rework through thorough validation.

Integrations & Deployment

• Integrate applications with external systems, including Xero, Microsoft 365, SharePoint, email platforms, and Stripe.
• Work with PostgreSQL, Redis, Celery, and other components of the existing technology stack.
• Deploy applications to Render and Azure Container Apps and troubleshoot issues affecting live systems.
• Support the development and maintenance of reliable integrations and automated business workflows.

Reusable Components & Continuous Improvement

• Investigate whether identified defects also affect existing application templates or reusable components.
• Apply appropriate fixes to shared components to prevent recurring issues across projects.
• Identify useful generic functionality and contribute it to the reusable component library.
• Improve development templates, testing practices, and implementation processes over time.

Documentation & Collaboration

• Maintain clear technical documentation, specifications, and implementation plans.
• Provide accurate progress updates and promptly raise blockers or tasks that exceed their estimates.
• Prepare written handover notes so work can be continued effectively by other team members.
• Follow established development, security, and code-review practices throughout the software delivery lifecycle.
