Position Overview

As a Lead Software Engineer at Converge, you will be the technical anchor of our engineering team — setting the direction for how we build, owning the hardest architectural problems, and ensuring the platform scales with the business. Reporting to our CTO, you will work across a modern full-stack codebase, drive our AI-powered roadmap, and serve as the primary technical partner to underwriting, actuarial, and product leadership.

You are an experienced engineer and leader who combines deep technical craft with the ability to align people and priorities. You understand that the decisions you make today shape the platform for years — and you take that responsibility seriously.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership & Architecture

• Own and drive architectural decisions across the entire platform — from API design and data modeling to infrastructure, security, and third-party integrations.
• Define, enforce, and continuously raise engineering standards: code quality, testing coverage, documentation, and secure coding practices consistent with our SOC 2 posture.
• Lead technical scoping, risk identification, and estimation for major product initiatives, providing leadership with clear and honest assessments.
• Drive the AI-powered underwriting roadmap, leading the team in building intelligent automation that sharpens how our underwriters assess cyber risk.
• Proactively identify and resolve technical debt, making strategic decisions that balance short-term delivery with long-term platform health.

Mentorship & Team Development

• Lead, mentor, and develop a team of senior and mid-level engineers through hands-on coaching, code reviews, and pairing sessions.
• Set the engineering bar — model excellence in clean, well-tested, secure code and build a culture where the whole team aspires to the same standard.
• Foster a culture of psychological safety, continuous learning, and high accountability across the engineering organization.

Cross-Functional Partnership

• Serve as the primary technical partner to underwriting, actuarial, and product leadership — translating complex business requirements into scalable technical solutions.
• Partner directly with the CTO to define technical strategy, align on roadmap priorities, and plan for platform scalability.
• Lead the engineering team's contribution to our ongoing SOC 2 journey, ensuring practices meet and exceed security and data integrity requirements.
• Own relationships with external data providers and risk analytics platforms (e.g., KYND) to ensure robust integration and data quality across the ecosystem.

Execution

• Lead the design and delivery of production-grade features across our core insurance platform: quoting, policy management, broker workflows, and claims integrations.
• Architect and maintain reliable, observable data pipelines that power risk assessment and actuarial modeling.
• Own CI/CD infrastructure, deployment reliability, and platform observability in close partnership with engineering leadership.
• Ensure the platform scales securely as Converge grows — both in user volume and in the sophistication of our product.

Requirements

• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, with at least 3 years in a lead or principal capacity.
• Proven ownership of complex, production-grade systems end-to-end — from architecture through deployment, scaling, and long-term reliability.
• Expert command of software engineering principles: clean code, SOLID, design patterns, distributed systems, and API-first thinking.
• Demonstrated track record of driving architectural decisions and communicating technical strategy clearly to non-engineering stakeholders including executives.
• Proven ability to lead, grow, and retain a high-performing engineering team through mentorship, hiring, and cultural leadership.
• Security-conscious mindset — you design systems with data integrity, access control, and compliance embedded from the start.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication: you can translate complex technical concepts clearly for underwriters, actuaries, and executives.
• Genuine intellectual curiosity about the intersection of technology, data, and risk — you want to understand the business deeply, not just the codebase.
• Competency with AWS, Docker, Apache Airflow, Neo4j, GraphQL, and CDNs.
• Proficient understanding of version control best practices using Git.

Nice to Have

• Experience in insurance, fintech, or other regulated industries.
• Familiarity with AI/ML integrations, LLM APIs, or building intelligence into business workflows.
• Experience with event-driven architectures, webhooks, or third-party data integrations.
• Knowledge of cyber security concepts (vulnerability scanning, threat intelligence, security scoring).
• Exposure to SOC 2, ISO 27001, or other compliance frameworks as an active engineering contributor.
• Previous experience at a startup or high-growth tech company in a lead or principal role.
• Familiarity with insurance policy administration systems or broker-facing platforms.

Education

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent.

Compensation & Benefits

• Pay Range: $8000 – $10,800/mo annually (commensurate with experience and location).
