SYSTEMS DEVELOPER

MARKETING & DIGITAL GROWTH DIVISION

PURPOSE SUMMARY

At Compassion Canada, a Developer participates as a software, systems, and application programmer, while reporting to the Digital Design & Development Manager. The Systems Developer is responsible for building, maintaining, and augmenting software solutions to meet business growth expectations, through applications, libraries, and APIs designed for internal or external use. A developer is expected to be well versed in multiple modern development languages, protocols, and tools, and must be an excellent problem solver, researcher, and solution finder. Adaptability to new methodologies, as well as familiarity with standardized development architecture patterns is required.

TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES

Development:

• Designs, and writes new software solutions in accordance with architectural patterns.
• Develops and maintains micro-services for web and application integration.
• Documents code solutions inline and in standalone reference systems.
• Performs manual and automated testing in accordance with standard testing practices.
• Creates and enhances observability for new and existing software solutions and integrations.
• Deploys through manual deployments and creates automated deployment, testing, and reporting systems.

Research & Architecture:

• Investigates emerging technologies and trends to recommend innovative solutions that deliver added business value.
• Continually updates technical knowledge and skills through external courses and reading material.
• Regularly communicates appropriate new research information to other development team members.

Administrative:

• Actively reports and communicates activities, and progressions on assigned projects.
• Follows company communication, reporting and time/project logging requirements.
• Assists the department/team with other duties as requested. 
• Focuses on applying security best-practices throughout the entire process of the development lifecycle.

WHO YOU ARE MATTERS

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

• Demonstrated experience with multiple programming languages, with preference given to those who already have experience in Java.
• Expertise in AI-driven development, including token usage optimization, prompt-engineering, and data security best practices for agentic development.
• Demonstrated experience implementing automated testing and deployment methodologies in cloud-centric or hybrid environments.
• Has excellent discipline in practices, including but not limited to dedication to voluntary self-improvement, dedication to punctuality in deliverables.
• Ability to take leadership of some projects as appropriate.
• Ability to take direction from senior developers and project managers as appropriate to a given project.
• Ability to work effectively in a collaborative setting as well as independently.

WHAT YOU BRING MATTERS

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

• Post secondary education or technical credential in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a related discipline required.
• A minimum of three (3) years of professional experience in software and application development in enterprise or large-scale environments is required.
• A minimum of three (3) years of experience in system integration, including Application Programming Interface (API) management, design, and development of microservices.
• Proven experience with automation tools and deployment pipelines.
• AWS Certified Solutions Architect or equivalent cloud certification is considered a strong asset.
• Experience in data security practices, including security for data at rest and in transit, and web application security standards.

• Demonstrated proficiency with the following technologies:
  • Java
  • AWS (Lambda, Fargate, CloudFormation, SQS, EventBridge, S3 Buckets, CloudWatch)
  • JavaScript, TypeScript, Node.js
  • NoSQL and RDBMS database technologies
  • Git DevOps and GitHub
  • Development of microservice architecture

• Experience with the following is considered an asset:
  • Workato or other automation platforms
  • ReactJS, Redux
  • Open-source contributions
  • Developing applications/services using a combination of REST, GraphQL, NoSQL, and RDBMS technologies
  • Participation in large-scale application or web development projects and collaboration within software development teams
  • Grafana or other similar observability platforms
  • GitHub Copilot and related AI development models and tools.

WORKING CONDITIONS

• This position functions within a remote-first work model, operating primarily from a home-based office within Canada.
• This role is expected to regularly engage in virtual meetings and occasional in-person collaboration.
• This role may be assigned to support a specific Region or Province/Territory. When assigned, primary residence must be within that designated area as it is an essential requirement of the position. 
• Flexible working hours are required to accommodate time-sensitive development cycles, cross-team collaboration, and project deadlines.
• Overtime may be required during critical project deployments, integration cycles, or system maintenance periods.
• Travel may be required for team collaboration, vendor engagements, or technical workshops.
• Work involves collaboration with cross-functional teams, external vendors, and stakeholders, requiring effective communication and coordination.
• Position requires maintaining high standards of confidentiality, security, and adherence to organizational IT policies.
• This position requires sustained concentration, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple concurrent development tasks within shifting priorities.
• The work environment involves regular use of computers, digital communication tools, and online project management systems.
• Continuous learning and professional development are expected to stay current with emerging development technologies, frameworks, and cloud infrastructure trends.
